I'm going to pick up my new bird, hopefully, this Sunday and am wondering...

• How you transported your birds to your home?

We kept my previous birds in their cage, as it fit upright in the back seat of our car (they lived in a sleeper cage). Obviously, I can't do this with my new bird as the cage is huge and I wouldn't want him/her to be hurt if it panics. I'm debating between a metal dog crate with a perch and a mesh/metal bird carrier, I just wanted to hear your opinions.
I went to PetsMart to get more toys and perches. Anyways, I ended up talking to one of the workers who suggested buying a "cardboard pet carrier" even after I said the trip was an 1 1/2 hours long and I would getting a Macaw or African Grey. CARDBOARD? I thought that was only used for finches on 15 minute rides- not a big bird that would shred the box into pieces in seconds.

Yes, they do chew up the cardboard carriers. I had to bring merlin home from the vet w/duct tape all over his one day. I use a plastic pet carrier (cat size), I dont put in a perch, but we don't travel that often & he seems ok.

We use a plastic mini dog carrier we just put newspaper on the bottom and go we did this for our cockatoo and now do the same for our pionus. We actually bought it at wal-mart and it was under $10.

I havent gotten my bird yet but I am going to use a plastic bird carrier. I got it at Petco for $30 off because it is discontinued.

Just don't forget no matter which carrier you get don't forget to clean it and sanitize it. GSE (grapefruit seed extract) is a very good thing when you have birds it kills all bacteria and makes things safe for birds.

I'm going to be transporting Lucy in a cleaned out cat carrier with a fleece blanket inside and probably my hoodie over it so she doesn't get scared. I have to drive her an hour and a half home so I'm hoping all will go well

I saw a little dog carrier at Walmart for $10 too. I was hesitant to buy it as I'm not sure whether I'll be bringing home the Macaw or the African Grey (Macaw's tail won't fit in a carrier).

Wow that's good price! Most bird carriers (for a large bird) are $150-$300 around here.

Just make sure she doesn't overheat in there!

Yeah its awesome it is for probably up to a conure and it was $10

We have a little carrier with a bird cage inside. I see it online advertised for ferrets and small rodents, but the one we found had a perch inside the cage and seems perfect for my little bird. They had a larger size - good for a medium sized bird maybe. Basically, it's a small travel cage inside a fabric bag. My Keats loves the 'window' screens on the sides. They let in light and air, but the fabric covering gives him privacy and makes him feel safe in strange situations. It also provides shade. It's kind of like 2 carriers in one
