What causes early death in parrots? & Are there any safe huts?

Besides the obvious (not keeping things clean so they don't get sick) and even with going to the vet regularly, what causes death in parrots that according to a few places that I have been reading should live many years. I read that, parrots don't live as long as they should in captivity. I can't remember the site but, I found that rather interesting.

Also, I wanted to get a hut, I looked at the snuggle hut, and one other, and the reviews were good for the birds that didn't die! It seems they got either tangled or strangled in the thread. Is there anything that can keep them warm without worrying about loose strings choking them?

Check the hut often to make sure there's no loose threads, and that the bird isn't chewing a hole in it. I check River's hut, but so far (knock on wood), he hasn't done any damage to it, aside from chewing off the cloth tag that had been attached to the top.

I have the same hut as Rio's mom and have had great luck out of them so far. I have 2 the same color so i can keep them washed and clean for Joe Joe. Just check the hut everytime you clean the cage. If you see any damage just throw it away. So far keeping them clean has wore mine out more than the sun has

River also has a little house looking thing. It's made of cloth, looks like a little house (complete with chimney lol), and you hang it over a perch. He doesn't sleep in it, but likes to go inside and peek under it at me. His boing is right above it, and he loves hanging off the boing, sliding down the "roof" on his back and onto the perch. It's really a funny site to see!

I use a bird tent made of fabric, and it's not as fluffy as a happy hut but I have never seen a thread (at all!) and my birds love it!

I use a happy hut and have had no problems.

I have great sympathy for anyone who has lost a loved one in a hut, a toy, or in any other situation. There certainly are birds who have died by being tangled in huts - but it does not seem they are a bigger risk than anything else. Death is tragic, death is unpredictable.

Just because a few people have choked on tofu does not prove all those whacky vegans are making a bad choice ... the fact that meat is so delicious does! ;)

Ok, a bit 'tasteless' of a joke (sorry again ...) but the point is, tragedy strikes indiscriminately. I don't think a decently maintained hut poses any more risk than any cage without a hut.

I have to start sewing! Those things look really easy to make, and with the amount of animals I have it would be cheaper. The link on the first page had some cool huts. I like those. I had saw those for guinea pigs and intend on getting some for my guineas, didn't know I could use them for parrots too. Super awesome.

I can't believe no one has mentioned diet!! Keeping your pet on a healthy diet is necessary for preventing disease and early death.

Yep they shouldn't be too hard! I suggest getting a fluffy fleece and pulling the thread tight, so the thread kind of "disappears" inside the thick fleece. It'll be harder for your bird to find it in case he/she turns out to be a chewer! Good luck, and if you figure out a good pattern to use please share!! :D I think this would be an awesome DIY project for us. I can give you some close up pictures of mine if you need any. Somehow the lady who made it was able to hide all of the threads. I thought about trying to make one myself but I couldn't figure out how she did it...!

Wishful thinking for me huh? I don't even know if I can sew a straight line! Lol. First I would need a sewing machine (Hello Kitty in pink of course.) I need to see if I can find one used. In the meantime though I will but them, they don't seem to be that expensive. There's a fluffy hut, like the one I first wanted saw it on amazon for about 9 bucks. Looks super fluffy and comfortable.

Lol oh! :D I usually hand-sew things. I made a little flight suit, with three snap-buttons instead of a velcro, but I still need to buy some elastic so I can finish the straps . If the forum members approve of it I'll post a DIY :D
