Happy new year

we just got back from holiday for 10 days and whilst away had Jimmy living at a bird sitter who has two lorikeets. He was extremely well looked after but.....he has now got what I can only describe as a lorikeet accent and he now screeches and squeals continously unless he is getting attention, and even then he still screeches.
Obviously trying not to reinforce it by giving him attention but it is really getting to us. Prior to this he was saying lots of things such as what are you doing, do you want a cup of tea, stupid dog etc all I have heard from him in the last 4 days is hello and screeching, it starts very early in morning and goes on until we cover him in his cage at night (early bedtimes for him at moment).

can anyone help?

10 days is a very short time in a parrots life...

I would just go back to his previous routine.. it might take a while, but keep at it...

Pagie, I would seriously think about taking Jimmy to the Vet to have a check up. I board parrots all the time & this sort of thing just doesn't happen. My first thought was that your parrot may be in pain.

It is possible something is wrong and the screaming is to let you know. Although I now have an amazon quickly learning Nanday. Last night they were both screeching in unison, lol! She would let our her screech and then he'd do it back, and it went on for 10 minutes or so.

I agree, something could be wrong, however she might just be a loud parrot. I would take her to the vet just to be sure. BEST OF LUCK

Ok took Jimmy to vet, all ok although Jimmy not happy with that turn of events, but screeching once I'm out of sight continues, I have managed (in exchange for sunflower seeds) got him to say hello but he is saying it in a completely different accent. He is doing a lot of ear piercing whistling as well. Apart from the noise he is his usual self. Is it possible that he has spent his holiday imitating and playing with the lorikeets, and is now calling for them and/or still copying their sounds? And if so how can I discourage the sounds he's making?

I don't know if you can discourage him from making the new, exciting noises he has just learned.Weither you realize it or not it is getting a reaction from you.More so than the quiet mumblings he used in the past. The old adage"ignore the bad and reward the good" apply here. It will take some time to fix this problem if it ever completely goes away. Becareful what you expose your pet parrot too,the more birds they are around the more they'll act like a parrot.

The funny part is that I knew I shouldn't match up Rowdy with another similar type of conure, like another Nanday, Sun or Jenday. I knew they would have screeching contests because she screeches to the conures and other loud birds she sees on TV shows. A couple of days ago we watched a show with a bunch of noisy Ringnecks and related parrots and she enjoyed that, too. So I guess it's good I didn't get a Ringneck as well!

However, I did get a bird who is good at making and imitating other sounds. Hopefully Pete doesn't decide it's fun to be a conure or my house will get considerably louder.

Today whistling and screeching much less, lot more mumbling.... Phew don't think I could live with a lorikeet!!!!! He's practicing his hellos and laughing at the moment much more peaceful I'll have to be careful who I introduce him to if he has a talent for imitation.....

I'm sure this isn't funny to you, pagie, but it cracked me up. I never thought about the influence of other parrots that way.
