An Old Bird Can Learn New Words

I've seen a lot of comments on here that once a bird leans a certain number of words that is probably all they will learn. I knew my conures leaned a new word or phrase once in awhile. Not like when they were young and learned them left and right, but they still did. And I have the crazy Nanday who sometimes says an entire sentence out of the blue, never to say it again.

But, Pete has also leaned a couple of new things in the past week. Last week after we got back from the vet and he was upset, he told me, "Good boy" as if he was trying to tell me he's a good boy and I shouldn't have done that to him. That was the first time he said that. Tonight when I went to get dinner out of the oven he yelled, "Be right back!" Now that's something I say to them all the time to let them know I have to do something, but I'll be back soon. Also Rowdy says it to tell me she wants me back asap. As soon as Rowdy sees me putting on shoes or picking up my keys she will say, "Be right back?" in this pathetic little voice that makes me feel bad, lol!

This is one of the things that I have always said that sets our birds apart from our other pets. They know you are leaving, and want to express to you their emotions. Not by wagging their tail, not by rubbing against you, but, in your own language! They understand the concept, and want to convey that thought to you. How can anyone not love birds!!

Awwww, back when I used to work in the corporate rat race there were a few days I called in sick when my lab looked sad to see me getting ready for work. I might never be able to leave if Kazi ever started that!

I also don't agree that birds stop learning phrases or words. Kazi's 13 and he's picking up new words and phrases all the time. The older birds at the rescue do the same.

Well, it always helps when I can tell Rowdy, "Yes, I'll be right back." I hate when she keeps asking and I have to keep saying, "No, honey, I'll be gone until (afternoon, evening)." She does know how to pull my heart strings!

Ok, I'm pretty sure he said, "Whatcha doin?" when I was getting his medicine ready tonight and was in the kitchen again! I really hope so, as my BCC who passed away would ask me that all day and I miss it:) Rowdy has only said it once. She was on the coffee table, came running up to me and said, "Whatcha doin?" and has never said it again, and that was years ago. I would really like one of my other birds to start saying that.
