So, today Chase and I went to a parrot store in search of a parrotlet, so that we could actually meet one, see its size, etc, etc. Well, we went to a place in RI called Jungle Junction...apparently it is family owned. First of all, the lady had her 4 year old daughter running a muck through the store, eating pretzels and interrupting me every time I tried to talk. That's just kind of irritating and unprofessional, but not the end of the world. They had about 30 or so birds, not including the budgies, most of which consisted of smaller sized macaws, some Amazons, a a lot of conure-sized birds...NOT ONE cage in the entire store was labeled with what type of bird it contained, nor a price. That makes me think that they change the price depending on who you are. Not the way to run a business, and not having your birds labeled just makes you look stupid. Then one of the cages had these macaw looking birds with some red on their head (not sure what they were- no labels!!!!) and both were on the floor of the cage, one walking around and squawking while the other just laid there kind of on its side...either they didn't like their plastic perch, or one of them was dying. Not sure. They had 2 WB caiques, which I just love, and I was talking to one of them. She took it out of the cage and proceeded to cuddle it and kiss it all over, ignoring me and not even asking if I wanted to touch/hold/look at it. Not a good way to make money or act professional(not that I was planning on buying a bird there anyway). They also had a Hyacinth macaw in a sort of enclosure where it could be seen from all sides. The poor bird was plucked around its legs and chest, probably not very happy with its environment/enrichment. Oh, and this was great as well, they had the cages stacked three high, with the top level well above head/eye level...most of those cages contained Amazons!! Apparently these people have not ever heard of height dominance, and I think they're just asking for trouble, as most of their birds are not babies. Ok...I think that's my rant for now, sorry, but I had to get it out somewhere.

BTW, very cute parrotlet, tiny birds!! Chase is more excited than ever to meet Timothy now :D

No, it didn't look like that one...it was a darker green with a smaller red spot. I'll do some looking and see what I can find...still sucks that any birds have to live like that, whether or not they are rare. :(

It also had some red on the side of its wings, and was larger than a conure but smaller than an Amazon. Might have still been a baby, but was at least mostly full grown.

No, had red on it's head right above the beak, beak was black...I'm looking too, not coming up with much that looks like it. It definitely wasn't an Amazon, so I'm almost positive it had to be some sort of macaw...but a miniature one. ::sigh:: I suck at this. I should just call the stupid store and say, which one of your birds was dying yesterday in the corner there?

What a joke that page is, really ... if you are running a business you can't have your kids and wedding pictures on it ... c'mon now ... I wouldn't go there just for that!

Wait Tex, I may be completely wrong here, I really thought it couldn't be an Amazon, but it looks kinda like a "Bodini Festiva Amazon" picture I found on another site. Here, let's see if I can post it:

bodini.jpg

Anyway, still not sure this is it, I should have taken pictures (if they would have allowed it, it was kinda weird in there). But I can absolutely assure you it was NOT a RF Macaw ;) Sorry for any confusion, but I can't find a macaw that looks more like it, so I must have been totally wrong. I don't know my macaw breeds very well, and there's like 8 billion Amazon breeds...silly me. I hope the little guys is ok though.

No Eye Ring ... not a Macaw ... Macaw's have bare patches of featherless skin around their eyes ... this guy has feathers around the eyes ... probably a 'zon ...

I don't particularly recall the eyes at all, I was too busy trying to see if the other one was still breathing :( It was. But I watched the sick one more and his face was away from the front of the cage. I guess we should just assume it was an Amazon, since this is closer than anything else I've seen. Someone should break into THEIR store and give all these birds a loving home.

I hate stuff like this!!!!!!! How do these people even get a permit to run a store? Why can't people respect all animals. They have feelings to, not just as human amusement. I am getting myself angrier about this as I write. I wonder what we can do to help these birds out. I'm sorry that you had to experience that Lindsey

The problem is that I think these people think that they ARE doing right by the birds...she was over by the cage with the bird that looked sick and didn't even seem to notice anything. I'm not saying if I had a bird store everything would be perfect, but I would definitely check on all the birds constantly to make sure there were no problems...::sigh:: I don't know how to help birds in these situations. :(

Minzer reading your post about this store really annoyed me!

They could at least check on the health of their birds! And stop that kid from runniong up and down in a place with birds, scaring them off...

As far as that bird is concerned I think it could have been an Amazon or some kind of bigger conures, there are some conures that look like 'zons very much only they are smaller in size than 'zons.

I have found some of them in this link...

these pics sem to be a bit old but maybe they remind you of sth...:D

OMG, I had a look at the website and one page caught me eye "The Happy Bird" ha what a laugh. Maybe they were happy to be getting outta that place. A plucking Hy :mad: I'm afraid I would have lost it in that place, and started having a real go, probably getting myself thrown out. Places like these make me so darn angry.

Just to play "Devil's Advocate" (and Peta, I agree with you on a plucking HY) ... How do we know that the Hy start plucking there? I wouldn't think that most "mom and pop" shops wouldn't stock a HY as part of regular inventory ... they are too costly and it's not a bird that would sell very quickly because of the price tag ...

So, we could hope that this HY is a rescue ... we could hope, couldn't we?

A plucking anything is not a good thing. And, yes, one could hope that s/he is a rescue.
