What is an average cost of a routine vet visit?

We have a very reputable avian medical center nearby, but it seems that they charge $300 for a routine check up with some blood work. We have a green cheek conure - in case size is a factor. Does this sound about right?

It does actually, if the blood work is part of it-- at least around here (Philadelphia). The check-up should be around $100-$130 and the blood work at least $150. Pricey pets!

Yes, they are! We're thinking of adding a new member to our flock, which means we're looking at $600 in vet bills. Yikes:eek:

That sounds like a pretty good price to me! Kazi's well-bird visit, which included a full blood and kidney/liver panel, was 500.00. Totally worth it, though, to have an established relationship with an avian vet.

That is what it cost here in Md. I took my GCC to an emergency vet open 24 hrs. a day for an exam as he had been pecked into the sinuses by Rosie as he was attacking her. This vet cleaned the wound, did some surgery on the sinus to remove feathers and then drained it. He prescribed mediation for pain and infection. It all cost only $160. I was amazed. Now an exam is another things.

Sounds about right to me. Puck's first visit cost me about $350! I think a lot of it depends on the lab they are using (or if they do it in-house, how much they charge for that).

Thanks all - makes me feel better. I also emailed the vet inquiring about the cost. Here's the response I got:

"[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]I know that the cost of the examination is about $63.00. Typically, there is some laboratory screening tests discussed, particularly in a bird that has not had this done in the past or within the past 2-3 years, and this can add on cost, if you elect to do so."

The vet which I'm referring to is Dr. Brian Speers, (co-author of Parrots for Dummies and The Large Macaws). He has an excellent reputation - recommended by most local breeders and very high ratings on Yelp. I figured he may be overcharging because of his reputation. But it's good to know that his pricing seems to be more than fair.

In Sweden the price is around the same, $200 and I think it is OK. My vet used quite long time examin Ville and I think I got value for the money and is sure for now that he is helthy.
