I am sure it will have been discussed before, but is pinioning a birds wing as bad as it sounds?
Is it still considered humane?
Is it safe?
Can it be done to adult birds?

Just wondering if I am being overly squeamish.

I think this is horable! If you are trying to find a way to keep skippash grounded you need to find someone who can give a good wing clip ar try to do it yourself till you figure out what works. It takes lots of practice, but if you work at it you can figure out how to keep them from gaining height. I'm not an animal rights freak, rather believe in treating animals as humanely as possible and meeting them on their level every chance we get. Now I'm not going to do the bad bad people speech, but think about it - we put them in a cage instead of their native habitat, and by doing that we severly limit their freedom even if they are allowed out of the cage alot they should be able to fly to get away from a dog or cat or at least be able to glide a little. So yeah it most cases especially when it is just for convenience sake I do think pinioning is inhumane - not in the since that it causes pain, but I think it would have horrible pgychological effects.

Not trying to tear into you red but that's my opinion.

OMG you are not being serious are you.

If you are considering doing something as horrible as that to your bird YOU SHOULD FIND YOUR BIRD A NEW HOME.

INHUMANE Treatment of animals is wrong and pinioning a birds wings is inhumane.

I think so, yes. sounds even worse than declawing and debarking. I don't think it's humane, it sounds very painful. I would never allow that to happen to any of my birds.

yes it's horrible.IT's a surgical procedure that takes off part of the bonein the wing so that it can never fly. I Tm ight be convient but not very kind.

So its not just me then.
I wondered if I had over reacted when it was described to me me by the vet like he was describing it like it was done every day.
To me it seems like your cutting the birds hand off.
I think it has been done to new born geese and ducks on farms to keep them from needing to be penned. I am glad I looked it up coz it was painted to me to look like a good idea.

I'm glad to hear your not subjectng your bird to that kind of torture.

Is your vet an Avian vet or cat & dog vet?

I would change vets if mine talked about doing such a procedure like that on my birds.

If my vet ever - even for a second - suggested this, I would A) Remove myself from his services, and B) Remove "his hand just above the wrist" ... there is NO REASON AT ALL to do this to a pet parrot!

I am glad to know that we all stand united on this topic ... because, yes, this is inhumane ..

I agree with everyone. I can't believe anyone would consider this. Red I would look into maybe a different vet.
