Hi. I'm new and just posted a "Hello" message in the New Member area over here, http://www.parrotforums.com/new-mem...ad-conure-talk-hi-im-new-here.html#post164229 .

What do you think about the transparent, plexiglass transport cages vs. the more solid-sided hard or soft transport carriers? When I saw the 100% transparent carriers, the birds looked so "exposed" and un-shielded to me. I thought that it could actually be like a tease to the birds being in a totally "plastic" box that looks like outside, but is really a solid cage + there is not a cozy, dark corner to hide in if the outside environment is bothering or scaring them. I realize I can just cover it with a towel like I could do with his travel cage, but the travel cage is metal with bars really close together, and a solid top and bottom, alond with a short plastic "wall" that goes around the bottom, so he could get in the corner if he wants.

We've been transporting him all these years in his travel cage which is too big and clumsy. It takes up the whole passenger seat. He's about 14" long, head to tail. He enjoys small spaces like snuggle huts and corners. Most of the posts I have read on sites recommend carriers that have a darker inside environment, but then the plexiglass ones are advertised as the "cat's meow", in a manner of speaking. They are so opposite. Pritti's vet is only 20-25 minutes away. I let him out as soon as he gets to the waiting room if it's safe to do so.

What do you think? What do you use?

Thanks.

I personally do not like the transparent cages myself. I prefer the metal cages with bars. The soft cages with mesh, some birds will chew thru the mesh.

A good idea that isn't heavy or too large to carry would be a pet taxi....the smallest one.

Both my birds and myself don't like the plex-glass carriers. of course we're in Fla where heat is an issue. I don't think my birds feel secure in them either. I use a 15 x 15 x 15 cage for the zons and they're fine with that. Of course i use the same cages to take them out for baths and sunshine so they are used to them. Welcome to the forum, good question.

We use pet taxi here as well!!! Willie sits on my arm when we go. I hold him as he hates pet taxi.

We purchase a clear plexiglass cage for MAC. We found that heat was a definite issue. We modified the cage and are now determining a better option for transport.

I use one of these...[ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0054CNXTY/ref=mp_s_a_2?qid=1341555465&sr=8-2]Petco Small Bird Carrier:Amazon:pet Supplies[/ame]

This was my first travel carrier...[ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001CCJMU4/ref=mp_s_a_38?qid=1341555665&sr=8-38]Prevue Pet Products 91110 Double Roof Bird Cage Kit:Amazon:pet Supplies[/ame], but I didn't like it because Sully's tail would stick into the water dish and he would stay on the perch, he wouldn't hang on the bars so I got him the carrier in the first link and he loves it!

I use a smaller parrot cage of standard build. On our first visit, the Vet actually recommended a cat transporter, with finer mesh, or perspex on the side - protection from the elements.

That's what seems to be the best, get a cat/dog carrier, drill some holes in it and screw in a perch and cups. Someone who takes their grey to the same vet as me just uses a cat carrier with towels on the bottom and the grey seems very content in it.
