i've been searching on craigslist because i'm in the market for a bigger cage for my GCC and i'm seeing SO many birdy babies that people are selling. they're all around 4-5 years of age and they're all great birds... people "just don't have enough time" for them. what poor babies....

i would never be able to just give crowley away. i'm so attached, he's part of our family.

i just don't get it...

It is sad. Too many people buy a bird on an impulse, and do not realize what a commitment they are. They are living, breathing creatures with emotional and mental needs, as well as food and shelter. All we can do is keep trying to educate as many people as we can, sadly.

I wouldnt even say its impulse. I blame the petstores that do not inform their customers of the issues that come with owning parrots. when that sweet baby that the clerk assured you loves everyone starts biting you think there must be something wrong with the bird. Ive tried tellin a few friends what they were getting into before they got birds and they never believed me because "thats not what the petstore guy said" or "I saw a group of kids passing the bird around and the bird loved it" then they always call and ask if I want the stupid bird cuz its too loud and too mean.

I can see where people are coming from, but it is a shame. I knew there would be a lot of work involved with a parrot, but I didn't realise quite how much. For some, it's too much; like you say, not enough emphasis is put on how much effort is required.

even if you buy your bird on impulse though, don't just go, "oh well i don't have enough time for it." MAKE TIME FOR IT. you paid the money, the vet bills, this is YOUR bird. you made an adult decision to buy it, now you need to be a companion to it. it just irks me beyond belief.

People see the well behaved bird on YouTube and tv and think "oh I want one". But what they don't get is birds poop, make mess, lots of noise, and they have sharp part. Plus they need space, time and commitment. I hear " oh! It bits" well yes of course it does. I here people asking which birds are quiet, the answer to that is a stuff toy type. I'm a 3rd generation bird keeper. I have never seen a quiet, clean, bird yet. I made a choice stay with the small birds because that is what I can handle. I would love a larger bird but I don't have the room or the money needed.

I don't think most people realize just how much birds are capable of FEELING! It's some exotic decoration piece for their living room or a source of entertainment for a few months, until it becomes a hassle/noise problem, etc. Oh, empathy, where art thou?

It makes me angry and frustrated. And I hate to admit it, but some people I know wanted to buy a senegal just because it saw Oiver say Hi baby, give kisses, and dance. Birds are much more than just entertainment for two weeks trying to 'make it talk'. These people I know bought two budgies after they saw a video on YouTube of one talking and doing tricks. And they kept the little poor babies in a cage similar to this.

And no wonder these guys wouldn't let them hold them! The two budgies would run around the cage until caught with a towel. They would say 'Hello' an expet the budgie to answer back, in perfect clarity 'Hello'!!! I would try to change their water and food whenever I visited, and they also sai that fruits were bad for bird unless they were in the wild. What?! I still don't know wht happened to them, but I after two or three weeks, they were gone. I heard they let the little guys loose. ;( Just goes to show you what some people are like.

It is sad. It is also sad the price they are asking, especially for the ones that have behavior problems. It's like, "Please take my bird that bites, attacks, yells, hates all people and has pulled out all of its feathers from neglect.....Oh and that will be $500 please but it comes with it's old, rust, poop encrusted cage and a bag of seed."

.... That's a transport cage. Not a 'home' cage. =\

And so sad. =(

Yes, I agree. No toys either. So sad.=(
Ok, edit. When I said chased them around 'the cage' I more meant 'the horrible tiny cramped transport cage'. I never thought that was an actual 'cage'. I just realized that it looked like I meant that.
