Smile Small breed vs medium vs large breed of parrots

Just out of curiosity which size/breed of parrot do you favor? For me it's small conures like green cheeks. Ever since got one I can't see, to think of a better breed to start of with. I tend to favor them because they have the personality of the big boys but tend to lack the aggression. They are also not so small to were they are fragile but not to big to were their bite doesn't leave a huge scar.

On a side note I know for a fact that I want a bigger parrot sometime in the future but which breed should I look into. I was thinking maybe sun conures as noise is not really a problem for me. But I'm afraid to get anything bigger because of some of the stuff I read about the bigger breeds and their aggressive stages in life. I mean I really really wanted a grey bit after reading some stories of how there attitudes totally flipped after a certain X years I got scared off from even thinking about getting one.

I have a male U2 and a female goffins cockatoo. I love them both for what they are. For a medium sized house bird, my heart belongs to my goffins, Sassy. Huge personality, won't take a finger off if she does bite, very loving and not terribly loud. She's pretty much a mini U2, personality wise.

See if you can add a poll to your post

And is this a question out of curiosity, or is this for yourself?

If it's for yourself, then it would really depend on you environment, yourself, time, etc.

If it's for curiosity for what people keep... I like them all. Regardless of size. Each are so unique in their personalities and quirks.

Re: Small breed vs medium vs large breed of parrots

I never even DREAMED of having a large Macaw, always been a Zon fan, but when my friend/breeder told me a GW would be "perfect" for me I almost fell over. Man did she nail this one, ReaRea is the sweetest, nicest, most gentle bird I've ever had and she is exactly the same way with my wife. By far she is the easiest to deal with of all of our birds, also the most "puppy" like. For instance, when the wife goes in to take a shower in the early evening, 9 times out of 10 ReaRea will follow her (or track her down) to the master bath and want to crawl in the shower with her. She is by far a "family" bird and not just a 1 person bird. Now I may have a few problems with the other, but they're all jealousy based as far as I can tell, both of us can still hold Miri & cuddle with her as well.

I started of with buggies years ago and was happy with the little guys but now I'm working my way up with QP's and IRN and soon we hope to have a Eclectus. But that's as big as I will get.

Re: Small breed vs medium vs large breed of parrots

Size is relative, I think it is more about noise level and temprement. Our GCC is our smallest bird, but he's a BIG BIG personality and he's the one that draws blood most often! He's not an easy bird at all and he has no idea he is small. I call the Cockatiel our "Little bird" but in fact he outweighs the GCC by about 50%. I'd sooner recommend our Cape parrot, who is the biggest of the bunch, to a novice bird owner than I would a GCC given our experience. The Cape beak looks more intimidating, but he isn't nearly as quick to use it.

I know this is pedantic, but I'm an over-educated educator so bear with me... technically these are all different species of birds. In fact, they represent different genus as well. An Amazon is much more different from an Eclectus than a Doberman is from a Chihuahua. All domestic dogs are the same species, the differences among them are comparable to the differences in different mutations of the same bird. Parrots are a very diverse group of creatures. <Lecture mode ended>

Re: Small breed vs medium vs large breed of parrots

I also feel size is reletive. In the past I have had rosellas, lorikeets, cockatiels, princess parrots among others. The cockatiels outweighed my scaly breasted lorikeet by a fair margin but I never though of him being a smaller bird than the cockatiels. The lori felt like I was dealing with a lot more bird.

Same with my little hahns macaw. Small really but I just can't think of him that way due to his personality, intelligence, attitude etc

Re: Small breed vs medium vs large breed of parrots

i like all birds. but favor on the large ones. i have a macaw. but mine super quite. he does his nature call maybe 3 to 5 times a week. most macaws does that n a day. in very tame sweet nice. i rather get bite by a lager bird then a smaller bird. i rather handle a lager bird then smaller. its weird but true. i work this all different type of birds on the weekend but rather do the big guys then small guys. Roscoe is super quite. but i do say around 3-5 that time area thats when he plays on is a chatter box.

Re: Small breed vs medium vs large breed of parrots

Awesome! Thanks for the feed back guys. And I didn't really mean it like as if the smaller parrots have smaller personalities. Matter of fact my site had a parrotlet so I know about big personality in small packages. I just meant it as to which size to you like overall in a sort of pros out way cons kinda of way or advantages of having a bigger parrot vs smaller one.
