Thinking about getting another bird.

I've been thinking about getting another bird. I really miss Puck, and nobody will ever replace him, but there is a big, empty hole in my life now.

I've been thinking about species of birds and qualities that I want/don't want. I will no doubt live in an apartment again at some point, so a bird on the less-screaming spectrum would be preferable. Talking and chattering are great though. I think a lot of this has to do with the household noise level and upbringing, but according to you guys, species also plays a big role.

Also, I would really like a snuggly bird. I've always wanted snuggly birds in the past, and it was one of my favorite things about Puck.

And, I would like a bird that is outgoing and social. I want to be able to take it all over with me. I think I'd be good at socializing a bird even if it wasn't great about it, but I'm not sure how much I really can do if a bird is really resistant. I've never had a one person bird, so I don't know what that would be like, or how much you can work with them.

I'd prefer to adopt/rescue. The downside to this is that a lot of the pre-owned birds have emotional problems, and I am not really experienced with birds with emotional problems. I've had traumatized dogs and cats in the past, which made full recoveries, but birds are different.


Alsooooo, there is the small issue of money. I don't have any right now. Business hasn't been doing that great, and I have to put a bunch of money in to my car soon (and more if I want to get my AC fixed, which I'd definitely have to do if I want to drive around with a bird in it during the day time when we are in a heat wave, like right now). I can always take out a line of credit to pay for vet bills, and I have a ton of toys, and several cages already, and people who will babysit said bird, but I just don't have several hundred dollars to buy a bird right now.

It is good that you are thinking it through. Save your pennies! And check out all the rescues and meet the birds. You just may find a match. Usually the rescues will work with you as far as $$ goes.

Glad to hear you're thinking about it, that familiar empty ache is just horrible.

Personally, I'm going to have to recommend a Meyers. Small, clowny, quiet (in comparison etc), cuddly, 'family' birds.

I'd suggest a Sennie but I wouldn't trust them out and about with other people. I can barely trust him with my housemate

Hope you're doing okay Remy, no rush on getting another parrot. I would look at rescues, maybe something you wouldn't have considered may just out at you and just... 'fit'.

Green Cheek, Pearly, Fiery-Shouldered, Crimson Bellied...

They're cheap, colourful, cuddly, playful, more suited to apartments, smart, friendly - I think you'd really like one.

You may be able to arrange a payment plan with a breeder or store , etc...

Oh Remy! I'm happy to hear you are thinking about it! My best birds, (all two of them), are re-homed birds. They were both free from people looking for a good home for their babies. Sassy's mom was asking for a re-homing fee but after she met us, came to my home to see where she would be hanging out, she just gave her to us for free. I found her on Craigslist.

I just found this ad on craigslist. This poor macaw doesn't have any toys, cage is filthy, and looks like there is some feather damage. They are trying to get $800 for it. Blue and gold macaw bird parrot

I like macaws, but I am afraid of their big beaks and big voices.

I'm not in a rush, but I am keeping an eye out for a new feathered baby. I haven't emailed anybody about their birds (except 1 white-bellied caique, but it was out of my price range).

I keep seeing ringnecks on CL lately. There are these AFRICAN RING NECK PARROT for $100 for the pair. I don't know how they fit my criteria, but the youtube videos I've seen of them are pretty cute. Aren't these Indian Ringnecks though?

Poor Little Guy. It's a crime the way some people care for their companion birds. The feather damage is repairable, the psychological damage will probably take time. It's almost worth taking the chance if you could actually go and meet this little feller.

Sounds like you really arethinking this through. Thats great! I have a green cheeked conure and a timneh african grey. I love both sooo much! The green cheek is a little clown and loves to dance and is cuddly but a lot of them are very nippy. It doesnt hurt when they dont mean to do it. But when they do it doesnt really hurt but obviously a bite isnt going to feel amazing. My timneh is a little lovebug and is super cute. He loves to make noise and get attention around 7:00-10:00 pm haha. He stays up late. He loves making noises around them and loves to watch tv and movies. He is snuggly and is really sweet. He doeslike his cage but i just got his a few days ago so he is stilll getting used to his surroundings. i would say actually my african grey is more a people bird them my green cheeked. But it might just be my bird. There is quite a few conures for adoption and a good amount of timneh greys. But a lot have feather plucking problems. A lot are around the $400 range.

It makes me feel sick looking at animals that live in these conditions I feel so sorry for that macaw the cage is a mess no toys and it looks like the poor girl has feather damage as well if i lived in Florida I'd be glad to have this girl in my home after a vet check

I don't know that I'd make a good fit for a macaw though. I'm largely concerned about noise levels, and about biting. Also, my boyfriend doesn't currently have room for a macaw-sized cage at his house, which is where I spend my weekends. I have almost no experience with them, also, but that can be changed.

I don't know a lot about them, but from what I have read they seem like they'd be a good fit for me. I haven't seen any up for adoption though, which means that people must not be rehoming them much.


I just called the guy about the ringnecks. He said they are not tame, and seemed like he didn't really care about them, just the money. I feel really bad for those birds. Our schedules don't match until Monday, and he might have sold them by then, but I told him I'd call him in a couple days and see if they are still available.

What are they like, noisewise? I am in a house right now, not an apartment, with only one neighbor, so I have some flexibility to work with them before my next move, which will probably not be for a while.

I went to my local parrot rescue today to look around. There was a senegal and a meyer's parrot that really stuck out to me. They were both friendly, and gave me kisses. The senegal seemed more reserved, and when it beaked me, it beaked kind of hard, but was stunning and kept walking to the end of its cage that was closest to me. The meyer beaked me nicely, and seemed more hyper and clownish; it kept making some crazy goofy head movements.

There was also an orange-throated conure (I'm guessing) that was pretty cute, but it didn't seem to care for me much, lol.

There were also a couple of greys. They were neat also. They were in different rooms, and one would do the first part of the wolf whistle, and the other one would finish it. Totally silly! I was playing with the idea of a grey, but larger beaks make me nervous. I work with my hands, and a serious bite could keep me from work.

Of course there were several macaws and probably a couple dozen cockatoos. :-(

I have felt so rewarded when adopting my senegals. Especially when we break through to a goo relationship with lots of love and pets!

Good luck on your search! I've heard wonderful things about Meyers. Meyers were even on my list of potential birds but there's none around here! As for grey biting-it probably really depends on the bird! Pepper is a bit beaky but the two times she's felt uncomfortable enough to nip-it was not very hard at all according to the recipients. Both times (and whenever she is uncomfortable) her body language was crystal clear she was uncomfortable. So since you are already used to birdy body language, if you are interested in the greys you could try spending a bit more time with them and find out their history.
