Latex paint

I am remodeling our home over the next few months. It is a small townhouse, 1100 square feet, about 500 square feet for the kitchen, dining room and kitchen. Carla's day cage is in the living room, next to the dining room. I'm going to be painting the kitchen and dining room with latex paint. The last time I used latex paint it had an ammonia smell as it dried. We'll be doing the living room soon too. Is this toxic, just not good, or okay?

Re: Latex paint

Just to be on the safe side, I would see if you can put your bird outside for a few days, or even leave with a family member or a friend. Fumes can be very dangerous.

Luckily living in Hawaii the outside temperature is quite like living inside, but I normally have her on my shoulder for several hours every day. We rarely leave her even with a friend, 9 days in a year and a half. It will take some working out. Thanks.

Re: Latex paint

Look for 0 VOC paint, or very low VOC paint. The newer formulations should be quite safe. I'd still ventilate well and keep the birds out of the room being painted until it is quite dry, but I've heard of folks painting with the bird in the room with no ill effect.

VOC means volatile organic compounds, which is basically the noxious stuff you most want to avoid.

Thanks Deb, when the kitchen was remodeled I moved her cage to the bedroom, but I think she hated being away from the flock during the day.

Re: Latex paint

If not mistaken, pregnant women are still not supposed to be around paint latex or otherwise. I'm not sure if that has changed or not. But this has always been my rule of thumb when dealing with any kind of chimicals around my birds.
