As some of you know , I'm getting a sun conure in June. My mom said that I'm allowed to get another bird. I don't know which one. I like a lot of breeds, but only one can come into the house. These are the birds I chose, Hahns macaw, gcc and a eclectus. Since I will soon to be in a couple of months the slave of 3 small birds I wanted to see if I could get a medium sized one, like the size of a CAG. I want a bird that has the ability to talk( I know it depends on the bird but what breed has a higher chance of learning ?) , is beautifully colored, a good size and if you got a baby it would be under a 1000$ ? It doesn't have to be these breeds. Any suggestions are helpful. Also some info of me. I go to school but I wake up early to fit in a hour or 2 to spend time with my birds before school. When I come home they never leave my side until it is they're bedtime. Noise isn't a problem. I have a 7 year old sibling but she doesn't even come near birds. I can spend up to 50$ of food and toys each month,or higher. I want a bird that loves to be cuddled and is playful. I also want it to have a good life span. I'm looking into eclectuses

Amazon maybe? Orange wing or lilac crown? Maybe a green cheek/mexican red head?

Although a green cheek conure is smaller than a sun conure and you said you wanted something the size of an african grey...

Darcy (Golden-Collared Macaw), Puck (Caique - RIP)
Puck, my caique (RIP), had all of these qualities! He his speech hard to understand, but he actually said entire sentences sometimes! It just took me a while to learn to how to understand his gravelly voice. If you buy from a pet store they cost over $1000, but you can probably find one up for adoption, or even from a breeder, for a lot less.

I recently got a yellow-collared mini macaw, and he is also awesome. Talks clearly (only a couple words so far, but maybe he'll learn more), very sweet, and less psycho than the caique. Both are very loveable though.

Sure, my parants give me money sometimes. Whenever I need more money I just get some from my emergency parrot bank. Also I what you to know I am in middle school so I don't think I'll be able to take care of a amazon

I was reading about eclectuses and I read that males and females act differently. They said females might be more aggressive and nippy and males are a bit more shy. Can anybody tell me about this ?

It depends on many things, it is true that males can be less aggressive, although this isn't always entirely true. Every bird is different. For example, my uncle has both a male and female, they are cages separately and both given the same amount of love and attention, on the same diets, ect. His female is fine, with everybody, his male on the other hand won't let anyone touch him, ever! He would take off a finger of he got the chance lol.
I have a female, she never bites anymore, she never bit when I went to the breeders house, but when I brought her home she hated me, understandably, I took her from her home and placed her somewhere completely different after an hour car ride. Pretty scary. But after a month or so she warmed up, one day she just decided she had enough and I wasn't going to hurt her, now she absolutely loves me, as I do her :)
If you were going to get an eclectus it is important you understand things like special diets, that they can be prone to plucking, ect.
If you complete proper training, give him of her plenty of attention and a good diet, which im sure you will then either male or female (whichever you think best suite your life style) will turn out fine. Just remember the males can be VERY affectionate. Lol.
:)

Birdlover11, Eclectus are my favorite parrot. But i can't go past the Hahn's Macaw. I have a pair & they give me so much enjoyment. They don't have beautiful colours but make up for it in other ways. Mine talk, answer me back. They crack me up everyday. The down side would be they can be a little nippy at times.

No hidy holes/anything that can be used as a nest, no warm/hot foods, *bright* natural light followed by longer hours of sleep, diet change and changes with the cage... same cage, different interior design, different cage, different location, cage with a grate...

Even determined hens will still lay eggs, though!

It's one thing to read all about the pro's & con's of which parrot & gender & why, but in all honesty at the end of the day it doesn't matter what we choose, the most important is that we cater for the parrots needs. IMO the best teacher is personal experience. Not one of us knows how a parrot will react in our home but with the knowledge we gain through our experiences when things pop up we are able to sort it out. Most parrots are seasonal breeders.

I never have hormonal problems with any of my companions first & formost they are never petted, second they go to bed when the sun goes down & third they are kept on a maintenence diet that isn't high in protein. Works for me.

Thanks guys for all the responses. I love Hahns, my friends dad is a breeder and he breeds different kinds of macaws. They're so sweet and cute, they also know a lot of tricks ! I wish I could get 2 birds but it would cost too much at the same time. I can't find any eclectus breeders near me , the nearest one is all the way at the top of New York ! My friend isn't as close either. I love birds that are cuddly, so what I'm trying to say is that I would love a mommas Boy ! I'm trying to chose birds that would be comfortable with our life style right now. I'm starting to doubt a eclectus would be good right now. Maybe when I'm a older ? Is they're a breed of macaw that is a little bigger then a Hahns or as big as a amazon or is they're just a giant and miniature ? :blue1:

Basically the only choice in macaw is a hahns macaw or a huge macaw. Haha.
Maybe you could find a breeder near by who breeds multiple species of parrots and have their help to choose the perfect bird. Most good breeders will do a great job matching you with a species and one of their birds.
Goodluck!! :)
