Should I clean my Indian Ringnecks nesting box?

Hi there,

I have an Indian Ringneck pair who recently had two babies, they are now 4 weeks old. This is my first time breeding and so far everything has gone great, the babies are healthy and Mum and Dad are doing a great job raising them. However, upon checking on the chicks I noticed their nest box is getting quite dirty with poo, so my question is do should I clean the nest box and put new wood shavings in there or do I leave it alone? If I should clean it how often should it be done and will this upset Mum if I take her babies out whilst I clean? I have googled this question but have come up with conflicting results. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks very much.:)

If you are going to clean the nest box, it would be ideal to have a second, clean, nestbox that is identical to the first. Swap the chicks into the second box and hang up.

Now that you have the dirty one, you can proceed to clean it for the next time it is required. However, if it's a wooden nest box, and wood being a porous substance, you may not be able to 100% disinfect it.

I am not a breeder though, so an actual breeder may have a different opinion.

Thank you for the reply! The nesting box I have is actually wooden. I have new untreated wood shavings I was wanting to put in there to replace the dirty ones, just wasn't sure if Mama bird would become upset though.
