I got a shock yesterday........................

while I was watching TV, I heard a LOUD thump on the window next to me and as I turned around to see what it was, I say a bird falling to the ground. I ran outside and found this young Mockingbird on the ground under some plants. I scooped him up before one of the local cats spotted him.

I brought him in the house and sat him on the top of a chair in a small room. He appeared to be oK except for seeming disoriented and out of breath. He allowed me to lift and inspect his wings and around his neck area like a tame bird would.

I left him alone for a few hours and when I returned, he was flying around the room looking for a way out. I was able to catch him and release him back outside, where he flew away, happy I'm sure to still be alive.

Lucky bird that you were there. That used to happen a lot when we lived in Mass. We lived in the woods about 300 feet back from the street. cardinals especially would fly into the windows as well as other types. I used to put them in a large paper grocery bag with a lot of holes for air. roll the top together and leave them alone for about 20 minutes which would give them quiet time to recover then take them outside and release them back into the wild from my back porch. In 25 years only one bird did not recover poor thing had broken his neck.

Good thing you were there, the cats or even a dog mightev gotten him. I'm sure if birds did talk he would say thank you ! Oh, and happy thanksgiving !

So happy you were there to save his life. I happen to love Mockingbirds, especially during mating season, when they sing ALL night long. Nothing sounds sweeter than the song of a Mockingbird.

Yes, I agree. The neatest thing to me was when I released the young Mockingbird, another young Mockingbird came flying towards the other bird and they flew off together side by side. It was if the other bird was sitting waiting for his companion. How cool was that

Just goes to show you how clever birds REALLY are. Reading that gave me the chills all over. AWESOME!!!

I rescued starling that was 1 day old this spring. Superman talks up a storm making up sentences from words he knows. He recently started barking like my chihuahua LOL. Check out some of the birds at http://www.facebook.com/2012StarlingRescue

Well done Mike! The little fella would have been a goner had a predator got a hold of him while he was down.

It only means one thing......you keep your windows WAY TOO CLEAN!!! LOL. I don't clean my windows too often, it's my contribution to protect wild birds! AH

I'm glad he was ok though.

I have been horrified to be too late Little birds that fly into windows and are in shock on the ground can die where they lay. So lucky you were there!!

I have a "bird hospital" at the ready for when a poor outside birdie crashes into my window. Bird hospital = shoe box lined with old towels and a paper towel on top (for the inevitable poop), air holes poked in shoe box. Put injured bird inside and leave in quiet warm place for at least half an hour. Sometimes that's all they need to recover from the stun. We saved a gorgeous northern flicker at our cottage last summer. Even the outside birdies can break our hearts.
