home fragrance

This is a topic that comes up in many shapes and sizes for 'bird people'. My general rule is no candles, no room sprays, and keep the birds away when spraying perfume. (I am really sensitive to many scented items with asthma and allergies, so I am thankful to the birds that i "can't" have it anyhow.)

Anyhow for christmas i got one of those candle-less wax burners (using scented wax and an electric warmer. I would generally NOT use anything like this in my home because of my birds, but i received this as a gift and feel a little obligated to use. I used it twice in a room AWAY from my birds but i don't really feel safe using it.

Anyone else use things like this on a sporadic basis or just NEVER use them? I have a friend with a few finches who almost constantly uses home fragrance but i have always been too scared to take the chance......

i use incense sometimes not always in my other rooms of the house which is fine as long as birds aren't in that room NEVER use anything with chemicals, wax, essential oils by your birds. if you need something safe from your birds you can make a spray using 2 parts lemon 8 parts water and mist that in the room or you can boil apple peels and cinnamon sticks and mist that or put lavender sprigs in a bowl of water in the room i use the lemon/water mix most often cause its easiest but they all work and are completely safe! they defiantly freshen up the room.

Thanks. I don't actually like or want home fragrance anyhow, so i'm not really searching for an alternative. i like when my house just smells like my house, LOL! But it was a gift and i was trying not to be rude (even though i specifically asked to NOT have anything like this as a gift, but it was just misunderstood). I think i will just give this away (along with the multitude of scented candles and other tart burners i have received as gifts). Non-bird folks just don't get it. hahaha

From what I have read in actual articles (not just forum chit chat) it is unsafe to burn scented candles due to the chemicals emitted from the heating of the wax and therefore would be unsafe to use scented wax warmers.

Bottom line for me is if I am not 100% sure something is safe I won't use it.

I won't use it if you are planning using it in the same room where your birds are. If you want, you cam use in ANTHER room that the bird does NOT go into. I have never tried with my parrots, because I don't want harm my parrots. Some scented candles can be deadly for parrot.
NEVER use insect spray if you have parrot. It could kill them.

I wouldn't even recommend it in the same house because air circulates. IMO it's not worth it if you want scent get some oranges and cinnamon sticks, boil them in water in small pot, and walk around the house with the steam. It works great if you need to "freshen" things up.

my mom got an all natural soy candle for christmas. and since she hasnt been able to use her candles. sinse we got Cooper, i kinda hoped she could use it. she really wants candles, but she puts up with it just so i can have Cooper. anyone know if she could use the all natural soy candle? i know she could away from the bird. but is it safe for near the bird?

i also dont use sprays like febreeze or glade. only in the bathrooms(nowhere near the bird) and not if he will be taking a bath in there(usually in the kitchen anyways) and my mom's room is far away from the bird so she doesnt need to worry about things like perfume.

I've read that Soy and Bees Wax Candles (unscented) are fine. Obviously, ensure your bird is kept away from the flame.

As for Febreeze and Glade type products, they are not recommended to be used at all.

So what do you (anyone) use for insecticide? I live in FL and "no insecticide" is going to be a problem that I did not anticipate. Just brought home my B&G last week.

I'm in ohio and don't have many problems other than ants by the front door which always get resolved by getting baited and vacuumed. I hate to tell you but its gonna have to be all natural. Do some research I'm sure there are many natural ways to get rid of bugs. And the "pet safe" insecticides DO NOT account for birds.

no candles are ok to use by birds the wax can actually stick in your birds lungs and build up over time! Heres a website about it this one talks about how harmful it is to people so its even more harmful for your birds. Toxins in Candles: Sad, But True

Agreed. It only takes once and your bird is gone.

If you just like candles for looks like i do--i have some battery operated candles as well as a mercury glass globe with tiny string lights inside and a couple tiny decorative lamps that take little night light bulbs. They 'warm up' the ambience of my living room when i'm just having a relaxing evening. I don't care much for all the fragrance anyhow because of my own allergies and asthma, but i LOVE the way it makes a room feel to have that lighting.
