After a lot of research and amazing stories I have fallen in love with the Golden conure or Queen of Bavaria conure. Unfortunately there are no breeders where I live to acquire such a wonderful companion of my very own.

Over the years I have studied and experienced a lot of different parrot species but I would love to hear from others about some questions I have.

What I would like to know is what other parrots have similar temperaments and personality to the Golden Conures? I am looking for sweet, gentle, even temperaments in a parrot. I love the personality of my mini macaws and my current RFM but would like to know more about laid back more stable temperaments like the Golden conure.

There's a pretty good chance you will not get any answers to your questions because goldens are a rare commodity in the pet market.....in fact, the only live ones I have ever seen were in the National Zoo.

As to birds with a comparable temperament, you would probably either need to speak to a breeder who has wide conure specie experience or need to speak to someone who works with the conures at the National Zoo. The average parrot owner is not going to be able to answer your questions.....

There was a bird store outside of Charleston, SC that advertised a golden for sale back in December, but I don't believe they were the breeder.....the last time I saw their website they claimed to be breeders of over 100 species of parrots. The expense & staff requirements for that type of operation just doesn't fit the small metal building store front they display.....so I would say they probably act as a salesman for other breeders.

Try googeling breeders of golden conure parrot in what ever state you live in. I brought up some sites for Fla including The Golden Cockatoo that has some but it says that they can't go out of state and can only be bought with a valid Fla license. However their is a lot of info about them on the different sites. Happy hunting:)

I appreciate the time for your responses.

I do understand that there are no breeders in my state for the Golden Conure hence why I am trying to figure out a parrot similar in temperament and personality. It is a huge expense not to mention the legality I would have to go through to cross one across state lines. (there is a breeder a state over from me but again the license and expense of getting it here is not worth it when there is more parrots out there in need)

I guess since I am "not going to get many answers" for my inquiry I can always withdraw the questions but I just wanted to hear from other parrot lovers their experiences and opinions.

Although I would love to have a Golden Conure I know that is not realistic. Valentino my RFM with only half the cost of a GC took me a long time to plan, budget, and prepaire for his homcoming. My RFM is my dream come true because when I met my first RFM in 1997 I knew they would be a wonderful companion. Valentino is a true joy and wonder to have in my life.

I also have learned over the years that parrots do better in a flock than alone with only human's for company. Later down the line I would like to add one more parrot to our family. After quarrentine and all that is over the plan is to have the cages side by side so they can see/hear each other keeping company but do not have to "be" together. It is not a requirement for the other parrot to get along with Valentino and it has been my experience (my two mini's) they they probably will not get along and that is alright, not going to be a requirement.

Truthfully I would love to be able to take in a parrot in need of a home, displaced parrot, or rescue but with spending the last 5 or 6 months working with local's here not sure that is going to be able to happen. Maybe fate will present me with another parrot companion down the line. I don't know.

Until something happens I will continue to do my research with other parrot species of interest to make sure the correct choice is made with the second parrot. Valentino just might end up being the only parrot here and when the day is done I can be okay with that.

But.....I have that Deltona Freedom cage in storage.......*sigh*

I know of Goldens for sale in my area. Super sweet as immatures but very loud. Cost about 2,000 USD . There are also some in California also. Just too loud for me.

Richard,

Thank you so much for your kind reply as always you are always willing to share and help others. Thank you so much for that.

I live in the Midwest and I had learned to "cross" a GC through any state than in which they were bred will need a permit or license and is only issued for breeding purposes. I only wanted one as a pet and not for breeding. I believe the paperwork is only for breeding so I cannot get issues permission to cross the GC. I also understand people have gotten their GC's without having the paperwork by just "driving" to the breeder state and driving back home. For me I am not brave enough to acquire the GC that way because with my luck down the years gaining the GC in that manner would probably bite me in the you know where.

My avian vet did share with me of knowing of a breeder of the GC one state away from me and I debated heavily working a way to make it happen but in the end I think it would not feel right for me because of having to get around legal issues of getting the parrot back home.

There are also parrots that need a home. Homeless parrots, displaced parrots, parrots that are in rescue, parrots that no one wants anymore and deep down because I do have Valentino, who I have worked so hard to get, I should give a parrot in need a chance for a forever home. I will admit the bird community and rescue has not been very friendly or welcoming with me but I have not totally given up on still trying. I do realize a lot of things need to fall in place for this to be successful but I am willing to do the work to help make a match as successful as I can.

In the meantime I will continue to to my research on parrot species. I do enjoy learning all about different parrots and want the next companion choice to be made as an informed decision. I hope I will be able to help a parrot in need of a home.

I think you need to contact some golden conure breeders and ask them what it takes to purchase such a bird when you are out of state. Ya, it will require permits, but you should be able to attain one for a pet.

When you said you were looking for a similar species, I thought of Patagonian Conures. Honestly, I don't know how similar they are in personality, but both are big, gorgeous beauties in their own right! My second thought was a thick billed parrot. This was more along the lines of thinking about conures, then thinking about Valentino, and well... Thick Bills have similar coloration's to Red Front Macaws. The Thick Bills are even less common within captivity and may be even more difficult to get a hold of one as a pet as compared to a Golden... but they are out there.

Thank you so much for the information on Patagonian and Thick Bills Monica. I have been looking into the Patty's and they are hard to find. I have never heard of the thick billed parrot and will enjoy my research about them.

Adding a second parrot is going to take a while. I am not in a hurry but I am enjoying the journey of finding the right parrot for us.

I figured the thick bill would be like the golden conure..not available for me to get one and requiring permits and such. A lot of breeders that were active when I got my Noble back in 1995 are out of the business. It seems the bird community shrank and the great breeders that once were are no more.

I ended up getting my RFM from out of state as the local breeder whom use to breed them does not breed and actually gave up his pet parrots also. What was once huge in the 90's parrot keeping and parrot pets has really gone away. Even bird talk stopped publishing magazines.

I have to order most of my parrot supplies on line. The parrot community has shrank as well.

I will keep truckin' and look into a second parrot that needs a home. I would love to find another Noble macaw but even on birdbreeders.com search comes up with a goose egg. I shall see what may happen after I get though this horrible winter.

I never realized the noble macaw was so hard to find, I just tried looking and the only place I found was the bird farm, and it only says call for availability. I don't know anything about the birdfarm though and can't say if they are good or not.

The store the golden cockatoo in Florida often has birds that are a little harder to find, and there youtube videos make them out to be true bird lovers, but again I really have no opinion and can't say if they are good or not. They have noble macaws listed but it says that they are out of stock. here's the web site Pet Bird Supplies | Bird Food | Bird Toys | Bird Cages and Perches

*edit*
The golden cockatoo has the best warranty I have ever seen, the only downside is the vet has to be there choice. But maybe it's so people don't try taking them to vets who know little about parrots.

Testing expenses are your responsibility; should there be any minor health issues that require treatment, we pay for all medications and all medical treatment at a Veterinarian of our choice. If a Vet exam reveals a life-threatening disease or serious genetic issues, then we will either replace your bird or give you a full refund of the purchase price.

Found some hits on Hoobly for nobles... one pet ad from 2 years ago, and breeders looking for or selling noble pairs...

Search: noble

And if you do a search on BirdBreeders for Noble Macaw Breeders, 40 breeders show up.
