Since we have so many exotic, wonderful, funny named birds on here, I thought it would be a great idea to find out how you arrived at giving your bird his/her name.
I'm sure there is a story about most of them ;)

I'll start first, but since I own so many birds,I'll just name a few and how I came up with their names :)

1)Num Num is my very first cockatiel that I bred and raised, so I kept him.
the very first time I hand fed him with the hand feeding formula, he started making those funny noises, num num num num, as he gulped it down
that's how he got his name. He's my resident greeter and all the birds love him.

2)My newest member Ninja, is a gorgeous Gold Cap Conure. After I purchased him, I got in my truck, the radio came on and that song was playing "Inner Ninja", and I thought to myself, "what a great name... Ninja!"

3)Halo, is my beloved lovebird,we hand fed her at just 6 days old, the youngest out of a clutch of 5. the female had made her nesting material from newspaper, and it had crusted so hard on the tops of all the babies heads...it was like paper mache!!! some could barely breathe, others had it covered over their eyes.
Halo being the youngest we decided that if she survived that crusty stuff over her entire head, eyes, and only left one nostril to breath, she must have a halo over her ....that's how she got her name.

every one of my birds have a name with meaning. I love them all.:D:D

I like to choose names that sound exotic, or are an actual people name. My Senegal that past away was named Sidney, then there is Sierra (i changed her name and she loved the new name right away, luckily) apparently i am drawn to "s" names. Sam was suppose to be Simba, but it just did not fit. So i tried Samuel, Sam and Sammy for nicknames. Sam Says all three names and his last name lol i would have never imagined it. Daisy Jane is not named by me, she was my Mother's bird. Her name is two of my great aunts names put together. I think her name is fitting to her.

I like to choose names that have some mythological meaning to it or from one of my MANY fandoms XD

My current birds.

1. My breeding lovebird female: Eros. its the Greek God of love, I thought she was a he at first and being a lovebird I thought it fit

2. My breeding lovebird male: Storm Flyte. Flyte was the name of a book I loved and being spelled weird I thought it was awesome! And Storm because he was such a dark stormy color!

3. My Blue Crowned Conure: Sugar his name was already given and he had it for his whole life (5 years) :/

4. My Pied lovebird: River Song. River Song is an awesome girl form Doctor Who! somehow my lovie reminded me of her :)

5. My Green Naped Lorikeet: Fruit Loops. I chose that cause he is multi colored like that and he is crazy!!

6. My Green Cheek Conure breeding female: Idris. Idris was an amazing girl/tardis from Doctor Who and also the flight feathers on my GCC were Tardis blue!

7. My Green Cheek Conure breeding male: Loki. because Loki is amazing and green like my GCC :)

My past birds.

1. My Sun Conure: Sunset. 2 reasons I named her, 1 because I found her at sunset, 2 because she was also the colors of a sunset. My mother made me rehome her cause of the noise :'(

2. My Sun Conure: Zazu. Because Zazu from The Lion King is just great!!! Also my mother made me rehome him cause of the noise :'(

3. A rescue Blue Crown I took in briefly only to find a home for him: Emerald. Because h was the prettiest Emerald Green.

4. My yellow parakeet: Cutie Pie. because I was a little kid and she was cute as pie! passed away from old age R.I.P :(

5. My white parakeet: Snowy. also because I was a little kid and she was snow colored. Passed away from a sickness R.I.P :(

6. My Cockatiel: Tangerine. because he had tangerine cheeks! he drowned in a bucket of water in his outdoor aviary when I was a little kid R.I.P :(

2 cockatiels
Rosie was named so by my friends when they rescued her, they decided on that name in hopes it was hers since it's the most common galah name.

Kinji came with his name

I would never think of changing a parrots name, possibly shortening it, but never flat out change it :)

alexandrines : Oxy, Bruno, prince (was princess)
Prince and.bruno came with their names, although we dude shorten princes from princess. Previous owner originally thought he was a she.

Oxy on the otherhand has an interesting story.
In April last year i severely.injured my back and the doctors prescribed me.oxycontin. I had been on oxycontin for 6 months with my dosage slowly increasing with every script due to.my body becoming immune to.it. After 6 months i managed to get to a point where i had decreased my pain levels enough that i decided no more oxycontin, i hated having to take it but nothing else would help. I tried to just stop but.my body went in to shock so i had to be weaned off. When my partner mentioned to.me.that the couple across the road from where he worked bred Alex and they had babe
Babies and i could have one if i wanted, that was it. I was addicted g
to bird stuff and research. Oxy was in the pro essence of being weaned at this point. The day before i got to pick him up we racked our brains for a name. My partner being sarcastic said oxy as it will be urn new addiction and straight away i said.perfect. I finished weaning oxy as i finished weaning off the oxy

Tango a White Faced Pied Cockatiel
Tango goes comes from the ham radio alphabet. I wanted a name associated with aviation. So we introduce him as Tango Tiel. Piper, our last tiel was named after the Piper Cub aircraft.

Gilbert Oliver, Blue Crown Conure; Georgie, Sun Conure (2/8/01-8/8/12) RIP little girl; Percy, budgie 1993-1999. RIP Pepito-spanish timbrado canary
My dogs were all named when i got them....my parrots are named by me! :)
Georgie Leona was named for my two grandmothers. My Grandma Georgie had died and my bird Georgie had her birthday. Leona was my other grandmother's middle name.
Gilbert Oliver just kind of LOOKED like a Gilbert, and my mother's first name is Olive. She had said she wanted the new bird named after her this time, so Gilbert Oliver it was. My other connection with the name Gilbert was Gil Grissom from CSI. He was my "tv boyfriend" for the years i watched CSI. haha and i mean, he is kinda nerdy brainy and sweet, and that's good for a parrot.

Have never chosen ANY pet. Usually they're delivered to me. Both birds, Pretty Pete, an abused cockatiel, passed on 3 days after Thanksgiving, of a heart attack, we think he was 20+. What a character. He called himself 'herbird' + his vocabulary amazing. Little Miss Gracie McMacy, Pete's feline friend, lived 2 months more she was 16. Her heart was broken following the loss of PETE.

BOB another rescue (jenday conure), was pre-named. He's a cutie and smart. They pick me, or someone delivers them to me. It's always LOVE! I need them as much as they need me.

My Jenday George came to us named.

Our Hahns, Hahnzel was named by my 1st generation German mother in law. We did the spelling, but she picked the name and it stuck.

Sadly most of my birds come to me with names, but when I have gotten to name I have chosen from older rock or blues legends... I had one named Hendrix and Clapton and so on:p.

1 BFA- Kiwi. Hatch circa 98', forever home with us Dec. 08'
Kiwi was a rescue, and was already named. It's never been my favorite, but he seemed to respond to it, so we figured it was best not to change it. It's a nice enough bird name, but it just doesn't suit his personality. He's too beastly to have a cutesy name like "Kiwi" lol :09:

Pixel: female senegal, hatched Dec 15, 2011
Pixel has a single, very small, yellow feather on her one wing, so I named her Pixel after that. Though had she been a boy I was seriously considering naming her Stitch (after Lilo and Stitch... Because I still love that movie).

2 Indian Ringnecks, Tiki (DH's) and Pippin (mine), 1 lovebird, Gemma (DD's) and 1 in birdy Heaven... RIP, Wilbur.
My Wilbur :green2: is no longer with us :( but was my baby from day one. He would "ribbit" like a frog when happy and I was going to name him Kermit, until my DH just about perished at the thought,LOL...
When he was a baby bird, he also (in addition to ribbit-ing) "oinked"...so I decided on Wilbur. Then my MIL said,"Oh, but he should have a Spanish or Mexican name!" so I joked that I could always call him "burrito", and he became "Wilburrito"! He loved when I used his "full" name, because I would dramatically roll the r's in burrito, which made him happy. :D I DO miss him...

Tiki :grey:, DH's IRN, came with his (or her?)

DD Lovebird :yellow1: was named Gemini because she has a kind of dual personality; it's been shortened most of the time to Gemma, and she responds to both. She gets "Gemini" when she's being rotten. :p

Pippin,:greenyellow: my new baby IRN, was named NOT after a hobbit, but after a little green apple, a pippin.
