Hello! Hope I am in correct forum. If not, maybe someone can move this post for me? Thank you!
I am sure this has been addressed, but none of my search terms came up with info on this. My friend in Canada and I were just discussing the strange weather, and trying to prepare for "worse case scenario," what we should have stock piled for our birds!
If its dead of winter, and we are snowed in, and no electricity. What do we have in the birdie cupboard? Canned beans? Canned fruit? Canned nuts? What else?
There are so many lists of good and bad foods, and people food treats, etc, on line, but we couldn't find anything on what a bird could be maintained on in a real winter emergency, and stay healthy! With winter coming on, bird lovers in extreme areas need a plan!
There would be "no fresh anything." And with no electricity, the refrigeration would be "outside." All greens would wilt indoors, and mush up outside. What would be the best canned stuff to have on hand? How much of each should a bird have everyday to remain healthy? For instance, one slice of canned peach, 3 pasta rotinis, 1 tsp canned green beans, and one tsp canned "other kind" beans? How helpful is dog or cat kibble? Shelled corn?
If Ol' Pa is able to go out and bag a rabbit, can the bird have a bite? And what might be suggested amounts of all the above for small, med and large parrots?
Its an interesting excersize, and we'd be interested in suggestions on an emergency diet. Lets hope no one really does get stranded! Or if you do, its with Dennis Quaid, LOL. Remember the movie where New York freezes over???

Only when the last tree has been felled,
Only when the last river has been poisoned,
Only when the last fish has been caught,
And only when the last animal has been hunted,
Will we realize we can't eat money.

As far as food why would you look to dog or cat food?! Just get some extra parrot pellets.

A good pelleted food can make up a majority of their diet which can then be supplemented with healthy people food. But in a pinch they could stay very healthy on a good pelleted food. Don't reinvent the wheel! Go buy a big bag of harrisons, zupreem, or roudybush and stash it away somewhere.
