Am I rude?

Some of my friends and family think I am rude because they will ask me if they can bring someone by to see the birds. At first I thought well maybe because more people would learn about birds but then I wasn't sure about it and said no. A friend came over with someone else's child and she kept pecking on the cages every time I would walk away. It made me upset because I kept explaining to her that I didn't want her too. Plus Josey (B&G) is still skittish and she will bite fast. Plus I don't feel like I they are in my home to be a zoo exhibit. They are part of my family. Am I rude? I think I am a little selfish though because I don't want to share them..lol sorry I am just being honest

I dont think its rude I am all for people seeing my birds as long as they are quiet and listen to my rules ive told people to leave because they were too loud, kept poking the cages, or peeking in too close. You have to make sure your birds are happy and not stressed its not rude in my opinion

When I hat monkeys I had that problem, so I just let it be known that I charged $5 for adults & $2 for each child to feed grapes or peanuts to my monkeys.....wasn't long before the door knockers waned.....

Lol @ weco ... Thanks for your responses ... I am the happiest I have ever been because of my birds. I just want them to be as happy as I am .. Thanks everyone... Exhibit is closed

You're just protecting your fids! You know what's best for them and having people nose around without following a ground set of rules certainly doesn't fall under a happy birdy experience. I know that once my baby comes home strangers will only be allowed to interact according to my rules! Children are especially specific because their curiosity, although innocent, can be unruly at times and lead to unnecessary stress or injury. You know what's best and you certainly are not being rude.

NO you are NOT rude...but the people who think your birds are to be poked at and annoyed ARE. Parents who are not willing to teach their children to respect our fids and other pets are NEVER welcome in my home...and they know it. I do not tolerate that kind of nonsense and have taught my kids and attempt to teach every other kid in my life that animals are to be respected and treated with love and kindness. Nothing rude about that!

Nothing rude about it! The first thing I tell people before they even walk in the door is to stay away from the cages. No exceptions. If the birds want to be seen, they come over and show themselves, but no one is allowed to stand in front of the cages but me. EVER!

It's somewhat rude for people to invite themselves over, but it seems sort of unfriendly to ban everyone you know from ever seeing your birds. Just keep them in their cages.

When I have company I give them a very stern lecture about how birds DO bite, and that although social, they can be scared of strangers. I make it clear that if they dont want to get bit they should not touch the birds. I also make it clear that if they do decide to interact it must be under supervision, they must do exactly as I say, and they must not react in any way if they get bit. I do not allow children to touch the birds and I have actually taken Mango in his cage up to my bedroom and locked him away due to an irritating and misbehaving child that came to dinner. They are so fragile and so sensitive, it just takes one unknowledgable person to throw or hit a biting bird, and aside from the lasting behavioral effects, they have hollow bones! Mango loves new people and he usually behaves himself. I keep a very close eye on him, and I have put him away when I felt things were getting out of hand. I just say that he is getting over whelmed and needs to spend some time in his cage.

no you are not being rude!!! nobody has ever brought their friends just to see my birds, but if my friends or family want to see cooper I don't mind personally. my family is understanding and usually listens when I explain how to hold him or act around him. and my friends know if they don't listen they will be out of my house and walking home

haha. they know I don't mess around with certain things.

Oooo! I can feel a soapbox moment coming on! This is one thing that really, really sets my arse on fire (which is kinda scary on account of, I've got a big one).

I have a sister-in-law who visits occasionally. As soon as she arrives, she's on the hunt for our cats because she is a 'cat lover'. This means, she likes to hold them and pose them in human-like positions and tickle them and tease them and rub their fur the wrong way till they hiss and then seize hold of their muzzles proclaiming them to be 'nasty' and not at all like her own long-suffering cat.

I used to try and be polite and once even tried to excuse the cats' reluctance to come to her. I no longer do that. Just once, I blew up at the woman and told her these were *my* cats and they'd be treated like animals, not like animated stuffed toys. I told her not to handle them ever again and to please ignore them if they crossed her path. She was rather miffed by that and left soon afterward. Since then, she still seeks out the cats, but it only takes one look from me and she leaves 'em alone.

Since I got the Beaks, she's been making noises about coming over and handling them (she has budgies - poor little things - and thinks she's forgotten more about birds than I'll ever know!). I'm kind of thinking I might allow it just once. It'll only take one time for the Beaks to munch on her and then she'll leave 'em alone. LOL! Poor Beaks: I bet she'd taste like a cross between saccharine and asphalt!

In line with this thread, my niece has just had a premmie baby. She's having the exactly the same problem! Everyone wants to paw and maul at the poor child, who only weighs five pounds. What *is* with people wanting affection from something which is not theirs?

Not being rude at all

You are protecting all involved.

When someone visits I explain exactly what Mishka is capable of doing, warning them not to try touch him (unless I give Mishka to them)

If my warning is not good enough and they try, I ask do they have a good medical aid and tell them where the closest hospital is.

That normally backs them off.

I have that problem with my chinchillas, I hate it. They're skittish animals by nature and I have nursing moms and show preppers and they do not need the stress. Drives me crazy. My pit bulls are more than happy for the attention, give it to them.
