Hey evrybody,

I'm new here, and I sure look forward to learning alot from you guys and this forum.

I just bought me an alexandrine and I have some questions related:

The guy i bought the bird from said its somewhere around one year old , theres no coller but i can see a little bit of grey linning around that area. When does the coller on males start showing?

When its in the cage its very territorial and looks like it will bite, but when its outa the cage it gets up on your hand and lets you pet it sometimes, how do i work on getting it to let me take it outa the cage with no problem, and petting it inside the cage?

I just bought it like 2 days ago, and the parrot wont eat or drink,,I know it needs time to adjust to its new home and all, but is it normal for it to go off food like that,,I mean the bird looks healthy but i'm kinda getting worried.

And heres a pic

Thanks in advance for everyones help

Alexandrines do not usually get their ring until they are about two years old. As long as the bird is pooping, it is getting it's nutrition but some birds do take an adjustment period in a new hame and that will depend on the individual bird. Our Alexandrine will pin his eyeswhen we reach into his cage and on occasion will try to bite but normally when we call his/her bluff he steps right up. Ours is only about 14 months old so we do not actually know if it is a male or female but his attitude reminds me of a male so I call it a boy. Have patience as they are amazing birds.

Thanks for the info, i'm so glad to hear that the ring doesnt show until they are 2 years old, so theres still hope that mine could be male. pinning the eyes is something mine does as well and even when i thought it was a she i couldnt call it anything else but boy lol. good news is its eating, and enjoying its viatamins. i'll keep you posted in case I progress any further into getting it to being more and more of a tame bird.

I have a blue and gold macaw along with an indian ringneck parakeet.
I have an indian ringneck parakeet that was like yours when I first got him. Every day i sat by the cage and read or ate or crafted something. I also put a little peanut butter on a chopstick and gradually moved it into the cage so he could pick at it. Also I busied him with the peanut butter once he came to expect it and then I was able to put my hand on the outside of the cage. I know your bird will be just fine as mine is too now! GOOD LUCK! :)
