Is it okay to bring my bird for weekends away from home?

I stay at my boyfriends house two nights a week and lately I've been wanting to bring my galah Oli with me because I always miss him and feel bad when I leave him at home. I have taken him in a modified dog crate once for one night and while he was fine as long as he was out of the cage with me he seemed pretty restless when I left him in the cage.. is this normal? he wasn't screaming out in a distressed way, he was just being more chatty than normal and climbing around the cage a lot

anytime they are in a space that is unfamiliar to them they will usually be nervous but the more you take them out and socialize the more well rounded the bird should become...that being said if Oli is obviously upset in any way I would reconsider.
Start by letting Oli play in and around whatever travel cage you will be using and try and make it seem really fun...them maybe take him over for a few hours just to see how he does at first and slowly increase the time spent out
you might also invest in a harness and try taking him outside and to the park get him use to as many situations as you can and as many people

I think it depends on the bird. I would try it several times to see if it is more stressed being home, or coming along. We had a parakeet that loved to travel. We took in on vacation and everything. That bird was a hoot, loved being loose in the car, and had to be where he could see everything goings on. Most of our other birds would not have enjoyed hours in the car and week-long visits to camp.
I hope your bird ends up enjoying it.

Yes your bird is acting normal. It will relax once it gets familiar with your routine. We take our bird camping twice a year and the very first time, he would not settle for the night. As time went on, he has learned that it's fun to go with us. The alternative is being alone and nobody deserves that.

I go places all the time with my birds. We us our travel cages as sleep cages so everyone knows there cage well.

Hello,

Birds get used to a routine. If you give it treats on arrival, it will look forward to a trip. I had a Galah that used to get car sick though. I always used the same blanket to cover him everywhere as a part of the routine.
