Say no to newspapper and get a floor protector :D

Sponsored Links
You know how we all put paper on the floor around the cage, so our birds will not poop the floor and ruin it?

Specially with bigger birds? Specially when u got wooden or carpet floors?

When taking poop off the floor is the same or worse than cleaning after a small dog?

I don't know why I didn't think about this earlier, but you can actially make your life easier with a plastic floor protector that people use under their computer chairs.

Example: KOLON Floor protector - IKEA

Floor protectors are plastic. It means that you can wash it with anything!
Also, it looks much nicer than having papers on the floor.

Hope this helps someone

That is a great idea. We have use something similar under our cage. I went to our local hardware store and brought a couple of metres of plastic that us meant for outdoor tablecloths. It works well - you just take it out side and hose it. Only cost about $30 for this because these computer chair protectors are quite expensive here in Oz.

It's not big enough for larger cages. It might work for smaller ones though. I still prefer news papers, they are basically free since we get them to read the news. So they serve double duty, plus I can cover as big an area as I need to by just adding more. Plus, I don't have to worry about cleaning the covering, I just bundle it up and throw it away and replace it.

Could also use a large acrylic sheet - just roll the cage off, clean, re-position and roll the cage back on it!

Could also use a square of laminate flooring without glue.

Or even a melamine panel.
Shop Duramine 1/2-in x 48-in x 96-in White Industrial Melamine Panel at Lowes.com

There are a lot of other options out there!

I just bought some cheap rugs...I just take them out and wash then every so often and they fit under the bigger cages too...they also help catch stray feathers and floofies

I used to have what ParkersMom has--I bought inexpensive 'throw rugs' for around the cage and took them out, shook and washed them until they were tattered and then replaced them. Now i have been more successful with Gil not pooping EVERYWHERE and i have just been wiping the hard wood floor. So far, so good. (if you wipe it immediately, not too bad, just a pain in the neck).

I am with you. I would rather throw paper away than scrub anything. It's also faster and I don't have to get my hands dirty.

Re: Say no to newspapper and get a floor protector :D

I use bed wetter pads (like puppy pads, but the kinds they sell for humans) and place them underneath the mess areas, then put newspaper on top. Most of the time I can throw the newspaper away and the pad hasn't even gotten wet... and if my bird does manage to wet through the newspaper, the pad as a plastic backing and prevents it from staining the floor.

I shake 'em out, I usually only go through them once a week at the most. Usually I just shake the seeds off and put it back down with fresh newspaper ^^

I did have a plastic mat down like in OP a long time ago (I no longer have it) but it was great for protecting the floor too!

It's called a KOLON mat and it's made out of PET plastic. It's like it was meant to be.
