Christmas trees

How does everyone handle Christmas trees and their Fids ?

Flora is a flier ( even with her horrible clip ) She flies wherever she wants to go. It amazes me how well she flies with this butchered clip, and she always seems to get to wherever I don't want her to go.

I really want to put up a Christmas tree this year, I haven't the past few years as we travel at Christmas. I worry that Flora will want to fly to it constantly, and that she may chew on the lights. I can foresee so many ways a Christmas tree could be a danger to our Fids.

Any suggestions ?

Maybe your birds are braver but my Green Cheek Oliver was scared of going on/near the tree, he wanted nothing to do with it.

Casper loves landing on and traveling around the tree. Never thought it might be poisonous or harmful...although we're always around when he's exploring.

I am not worried about the tree being poisonous, but what if they chew on light wires or ornaments ? I don't want fried parrot for Christmas ! Maybe I should make the birds a tree of their own and decorate it with popcorn balls and dried oranges and such and simply leave off the lights.

You could play it safe and not use lights on your tree. You can decorate a gorgeous tree with regular ornaments. Though it could be fun to decorate a tree with parrot safe toys

I like Kimma's idea of a parrot safe tree without the lights!

But if you like lights and lots of decorations then the idea of 2 trees, with the birds having their own, is great

Fargo didn't bother with the tree last year, he preferred playing on the presents

Just a thought if your bird likes to explore a real tree... Pine and fir are safe, but the worry is the pesticides and sprays that are used on the trees.

We will be taking our tree to a do it yourself car wash and hosing it down well before we bring it home.

The small birds have never been a problem, but we're not sure what Ivory will do, so we're taking extra precautions this year.

When we put up a tree, we always go into our own woods and cut one. My boys love the adventure of going out and finding me a good tree and chopping it down. We have plenty of acreage and woods to find a great tree. I don't have to worry about pesticides and such that way, and it is FREE !

This will be Oliver's first Christmas so I'm so glad you posed the question as I have some of the same concerns. In addition, I worry the lights will scare him although he seems to be fearless...

This will be Chili's first Christmas, but we actually don't even have room in our tiny place for a tree lol

I like Kimma's idea of just not using lights..
Or like you said- make them a tree for themselves.

string some air puffed popcorn with dried fruits as garland and pine cones as ornaments

maybe put some little foot toys in the branches so they have fun finding stuff

We have a fibre optic tree, so it's basically electric free, except for the base! They can chew on the 'lights' all they want, just means they snap off. No electrocution worries.

The bunnies are another issue.... :21:

Kimma that is so cute!! I was thinking of a little tree for Mina this year too. I was going to hose it and wash it with regular dawn. I figure if they use it to save wildlife then it should be ok for Mina if rinsed well. What do you think?
