What is the one breed you wouldn't adopt?

Percy, a 5yo BFA & Jack, a 8yo Budgie
A bit of a weird question, I know - but here's the back story.

In a previous thread, I mention the petshop that I reported for the poor conditions they were keeping their birds in. Well, the SPCA reported back today and said that they agreed with my assessment and will be removing at least some of the birds. They asked if I'd be willing to foster (with a view to adopt) one or more of the birds since their aviary is quite small.

I naturally agreed but I don't know which bird/s I should pick. They had almost every kind of smaller breed in the shop - budgies, tiels, conures, lorikeets and even some I couldn't identify. I do know that they had nothing bigger than an CAG although I suspect that one pair I saw may have been baby macaws (dark green, not sure of the exact breed).

Considering that I already have a rather moody and headstrong (but utterly precious) BFA, what do you suggest? I don't want to take any bird that would rock the boat with my Percy.

I also have a budgie, Jack, 8yo but he is very easy going and nothing rattles him :)

That would be species (breeds are entirely different) and there are many species of birds that I wouldn't and don't want, not just one.

As for you taking in a bird that won't upset your BFA, that's more likely to be an an issue with the individual birds rather than what species the bird is. So, since it's all a gamble, choose the bird you want the most. It'll all work out anyway.

The one I absolutely will not adopt is conures. Except the quieter ones like green cheeks.

well, any bird can potentially be a pain in the butt with Percy :p but, its up to you. lorikeets do need a special diet, so keep that in mind, and theyre very very messy with their poops.

For me it would be zons, why? Because every one I've met wants to eat me. I find them beautiful and amazing, but I wouldn't have one personally.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Depends on the species, but some zons will welcome other birds into the flock, and some will drive them out...

As to what species I would, and would not keep, that depends on the amount of time you have to spend with them, and the amount of room you have...

I happen to love conures, and amazons, and macaws.

Lorries are specialized feeders, and messy poopers...

Do your homework.

I don't keep any cockatoos either...

And even though I love them, I regret M2's ever having been introduced into the pet trade... because so few humans actually meet their care needs.

I should have added: With the exception of Galahs. :D I haven't really heard of many of those with many problems.

Oh, and as for Amazons...hand 'em over. :D LOVE LOVE LOVE them, obviously, or I wouldn't have 2 of them. ;)

True...

Though there were two or three over the years that wormed their way into my heart... Including a few M2's.

Amazons and macaws are my favorites... and conures are just shrunken big macs... love them all!

I never want to adopt a amazon, Pionus, or conure(except the green cheek, black capped, maroon bellied, and similar small conure), or a male umbrella or moluccan.

  1. Amazon - their bad reputation keeps me on edge
  2. Pionus - because they don't do well in captivity compared to other species.
  3. conures - because they're too loud and screechy.
  4. male umbrella/moluccan - some individuals can be unpredictable, and with a beak that size they do serious damage.

To each his own...

I really do feel like Zons get a bad rap.

A lot of that reputation has to do with humans who "don't get" what the bird is telling them. Remember that post awhile back about the zon doing the line of death dance? And even telling the guy "no, no, no!" when he started to open the cage door and stick his hand in there?! And the guy had the nerve to look surprised when the bird bit him! So, obviously that's the bird's fault, right?!

Pionus?! Really?! That's the first I'd heard of that one. I've never owned one. Didn't see that many rehomes either. I always considered them to be pretty hardy... and similar to amazons.

Sun Conure !!! Way too high pitched screech for my ears and nerves to withstand. I did foster a pair of Suns, but boy did they test my tolerance and I would NEVER have Suns near me again. Just my opinion, No offense to those of you who love them.

Yea pionus is the least one I've ever seen getting rehomed.....I like Amazons but just never had one to know a whole lot of what they act like. Perhaps one day.....

I have a friend with a Maximilian Pionus. He's 18 and she's had him since he was 3 or 4. The only bad thing she's ever said about him is he likes to bite noses :)

Those dark green baby macaws you saw might have been Hahns Macaws. They are really cool.

Anyway I think they are great birds for the right people, but I probably won't ever get a cockatoo because they are so loud and obnoxious.. but I have to admit I would love to have one of those beautiful Galah Cockatoos. But I'm more of a medium-sized bird guy.

Good luck and it's awesome that you're going to foster and help the birds!
