Ever since I got Savannah, my arm has payed the price with countless little scratches all over it! I have been looking for a simple solution that would not intimidate Savannah and be both comfortable for her and myself. Long sleeves are not the answer as I very rarely where long sleeve shirts. I'm hot blooded! ;)

So I found an elbow support at my local walmart that works perfect. Even though it is for the elbow, it will wrap around my arm perfectly and is thick enough so Savannah's nails don't dig in my arm. It was less then $8, too! I may buy a few to have at the store and home. I'm glad I found it as my doctor and my hubby have been on my case to find something so my arm doesn't keep getting scratched up! Here are some pics.

What my arm currently looks like, it's sometimes red as well.

Savannah got right on. She has been doing really well with it and is less and less putting one claw on my hand to avoid it. :)

I hope this helps others with the same problem! :)

Excellent idea!! My arm and hand looked a lot like that in December but more from little bites :)

I wonder if my Percy would take to such a thing? He's been terrified of his new T-Stand for two weeks already ;).

I'm going to try it! Thanks for sharing!

Yowser Blanca!!! Your arm sure looks like you got into a fight with a little dagger! ....I'm now inspecting my own arms.... :54: I'm not a hottie, like you, I've been wearing wool, so I'm all right for the time being. ;)

Come spring and summer, however, I may need to copy your most AWESOME idea!!!! :D

It's definitely worth it Wendy! It already feels better when she is on my arm. Savannah has a bad habit of leaning toward her perch or cage as I bring her to it. So she digs her claws in my arm to hold on. So this arm protection is working VERY well! LOL!

Marcia - Yeah those big Mac claws are tough on the skin!

I did something similar after a few weeks of trying to manage Alice on my bare arm. Here's a before shot...

You can also buy neoprene based archery arm guards that look like they'd be ideal. It's been too cold for bare arms these last few months but if I start marking up again in the summer I'm going to order one.

Yes, I looked into those, too. :)

This was an inexpensive quick option that I can buy locally and try on. The biggest concern I had with ordering online was, sizing charts were non existent and people complained they didn't fit right once they got them. At least on one of the sites I found them.

You can file those needle points down with a dremmel or sand paper. I won't do it myself, but my local bird shop does it for me.

Thanks ladies. She is due for a nail trim, but even when she gets her nails trim they still scratch. I would have file them myself, as I have no one close by to do it. I haven't gotten brave enough yet! :p

Awesome! Thanks for posting that!!!!! I've been thinking of what to use for years cause my arms gets clawed pretty good as I have very sensitive skin and that don't help. I'm gonna go buy it tomorrow! :)

I know the thicker ones work better for bigger birds, but for medium birds you could use an elastic Ace bandage wrapped around or cut the end off a sock and slip it on your arm- I've used both with my previous amazon.

That's a great idea, too Getwozzy. Like you said, I do like the thickness of the elbow support for my macs.

in the long run might be worthwhile trying to trim their nails. i've never tried with a bird as big as your macaws. much easier to hold my quaker in a tshirt :D

my cockatoo's nails go to a point like a nail, i actually wrap them up in jumpers/hoodies (warning dont use hoodies with zippers unless you want them to destroy the zipper) to do it. they hate it but its the only feasible option for me. only one bird has a severe sulk about it afterwards. everyone else just gets on with whatever they were doing once i've finished. but they are now scared when i walk towards them with a jumper - lesser of two evils.....
