Vet Costs

It wasn't that long ago that someone wanted to know about vet costs.

Well, I took Sydney in for her/his first visit and the cost was $280. My vet charges $45 office visit for a well bird and he is conservative on tests he runs. He said based on his exam is how many tests he runs for a well bird. Sydney appears in very good health, so he just did the basic blood tests. The only test I had done that I could have skipped was the DNA sexing and that was $40. So, it's not cheap, but so worth it for the birds health and my own peace of mind.

And for those interested my vet is a certified avian vet. He's also a certified Zon lover. He has a DYH and Nape that he raised up from just a couple weeks old. They are over 30 now.

I know we have a few Aussies here. Hopefully one of them can comment on that.

How long until the DNA comes back? How did Sydney react to his/her vet visit?

It's funny, I took Sammie too because I wanted to weigh her and compare his scale to mine and she gave him a good chomp and drew blood. Sydney was fine, no blood letting for her.

Vet said it usually takes a couple of weeks. We're guessing girl based on the green vent, but I don't know for sure if Sydney has molted yet.

I know what you mean - but for sure if you decide to just say she, Sydney will be a he..Seems it always happens that way.

I'm very thankful that my vet accepts Care Credit. A special credit card that is accepted at participating vets, dentists, chiropractors (and I'm not sure where else) but I think it's these types of medical services. Still, my Care Credit bill is so high from years of the aforementioned services, that I am using my tax return this year to put toward the balance. Nothing fun. My vet charges $65 to get in the door, and he's cheaper than others! Out here it's so expensive like everything else. I know vet care in general is expensive no matter where though.

I know a few people that have that card. I'm not safe with credit cards so I don't have any. My bonus money is what allowed me to get Sydney and the vet visit.

There's a more specialized clinic that's in town and open 24/7 that's more expensive. We use them for after hour emergencies. Knock on wood that I don't ever have to use them with these two.
