Rosa (9) the wonderful U2 -gotcha day Mar 2, 2014
Grey IRN baby - Coming home July 2015
The sun conure baby I was going To see have sold. So, when I got an email about an umbrella cockatoo needing a home I thought what the heck.... And went. Ugh. I am in LOVE. Rosa is an 8 year old umbrella cockatoo. She is currently picking her feathers and breaking them off. She has a bald spot on her chest and on her back between her wings. She is pretty much all down on her sides and tummy. But my goodness she is a dollbaby. I posted an ad online detailing what we could provide and a bit about our family and history. Her owner sent a message saying I was the first and only she replied to ever. She doesn't wish to part with Rosa but she is obviously unhappy. She says she sometimes checks the wanted ads to see if anyone might fit. Mine was the only as she felt like she could trust me. Rosa was very sweet and came willingly to me. She and I had some fun dancing and chatting. Their double yellow head amazon totally cracked me up, leaning towards me and whisper barking. Anyhow, her mom seriously loves her and has spent on almost 2000 trying to help Rosa with the picking. She hired a trainer, bought countless collars (it's not that bad to need one IMO) and sprays... But Rosa is just not happy. She says that the bird is cage bound in that she refuses to leave the kitchen where he is caged. And because her mom cannot spend all day in the kitchen rosa is not getting the attention she was used to and wants. She doesn't seem to know much about toys, I offered a few and she more or less stared and ignored them. I am told she does not scream, and there was no biting or fear shown to me, even when her mom left the room to tend to a dog. Her mom says Rosa often retreats to her cage when company comes over, and shows no interest in interacting with them. But she was happy to have my hold and cuddle and pet her <3

So I guess the worry is whether or not a rehome with help or hurt her issues. She'll have more time with people who love her but it will be a completely new environment, and a busy one... Her mom has said if after a certain amount of time we find Rosa is worsening she will take her back. Which makes me happy. She is truly loved and her mom wants what's best for her.

I still have the orange wing to visit tomorrow but this wee umbrella caught my heart. Just something really special about her.:white1:

I'm crazy. Aren't i?!

Did you see videos of Folger we just adopted from a rescue? Join the crazy club!!

If she picks down to skin I would recommend a soft jersey body sock. It will help with protecting especially if shes not mulitating. I would agree no collar if no bites or wounds. I would suggest a fleece snuggle buddy preening type toy. If you can increase moisture in her area and another member gave us the info about aloe juice from walmart in pharmacy area. Best thing to try for spray and healthy!

Getting a cockatoo to stop plucking is a major commitment that can take years and possibly she may never stop. We joke we may always have a bald chicken bird with Folger, its something you may need to just accept and love her as she is, which sounds like you do already :)

What type of diet is she on.... That may also be part of the problem.

I know its silly to say lots of time, love and toys :)

I think its awesome you are giving her a chance. I hope she settles in quick and post pics!!

No crazy at all. Sometimes you just can't help yourself when the bird picks you:)
I think it's great too that the lady she owns now is willing to take her back if it is in her best interest.
Can't wait to hear what you decide.

Maybe you could make a deal with the owner. Say if the bird isnt any happier in your home after say at least a few minths, you could return her? If they are truly concerned about her happiness, I would think they would agree!

You know multiple cages are not a bad thing..... and then you have funny amazon to keep you entertained and a sweet love who wants to be a snuggle and attention hog.... perfect balance...

Guessing not the what to do suggestion you were expecting.... we have 10 birds now and there are a couple at the rescue i wouldn't hesitate to bring home if we could fit couple more cages....

guessing you've got plenty love to go round.... see told you it was good crazy compsny!!!

Bwahahahahah My poor husband would lose his mind... LOL We have 3 dogs and 6 cats currently... 2 bird cages in our awkwardly shaped living room would be the flick that pushes him over the edge into insanity. LOLOL And with this being my first, I think being able to focus on one would be better than trying to figure out how to share time between 2. Having met the DYHA though... Someday Id like to have an amazon. I really enjoyed her cheeky nature. Sigh* Wish me luck today. :)

Good luck!! Is hubby going with you? Would find it funny he falls for one :) that's how we ended up with Ivory. We all went to the parrot palooza and on the drive all we heard from him was 'we are not getting another bird, we don't need another bird, blah, blah, blah'..... and guess who drags me over to look at a bare eyed girl that was being rehomed..., yep, him..... still torment him about it :)

Never would have thought it either, so gonna laugh if you have the same experience :) best of luck today!!

You're not crazy, you're a normal parront! ;). I avoid all situations where I could meet birds because I just want to have them all!

Well. Angus showed NO interest in either Husband or I. Not one single iota. And so Rosa comes home next weekend :) eek! Looks like I was meant to be a Too Mum. :)
