Since getting Buddy, my husband has been researching birds and I've told him to stop because he's getting paranoid. He's never had a bird, I've had parakeets and cockatiels so this is our first parrot. He sent me this link and his face while watching is priceless. So after hearing this cockatoo has 1500 pounds of pressure power with his beak, he googles Red Crowned amazons and learns they have 800 pounds of pressure power. Thankfully my husband is trying to interact with him, Buddy lets him scratch his head... Occasionally.

So I thought I'd share this video of Conan O'Brien with a beautiful black cockatoo. I have never seen a black cockatoo, he is gorgeous!

LOL! What a great video!!!

That was a black palm cockatoo. There are several species of black cockatoos, but the black palm cockatoo is pretty unique among all cockatoos! Even the other black 'toos! But then, the other black 'toos are gorgeous and amazing in their own right, too! :D

LOL I love his facial expressions! Black palms are pretty cool! Never met one, but they seem like quite the characters! I watched a video recently of one tap-dancing on top of a cereal box lol

The 'tap dancing' may actually be a part of their mating ritual, as out in the wild the males will find (or make) a stick and drum the stick against a log.

That Conan video was hilarious! And the two videos on the Black Palm Cockatoos were very interesting. (Especially their use of "drumsticks"! Amazing!) Thank you both for sharing!

Just curious, are the black toos as prone to the behavioral issues as their white counterparts? Do they have a different mental makeup?

I've read that they're not really "problem" companions(I.E They're not impossible to tame/bond, etc) but they're less hands-on. As a white 'too may want to cuddle with you and roll around and play, a black palm may act more like an african grey or an eclectus and would prefer your company rather than immediate interaction. I've never had one (Or known someone who has) so I can't speak from experience. That's just what I remember reading a while ago :)

I've also heard that black cockatoos are more independent than their white counter-parts, thus less likely to have behavioral problems.

Black palms are the most commonly kept species as pets, followed by red tailed black cockatoos. You should check out some videos of those species. :)

If black cockatoos weren't as expensive as a hyacinth, if not more expensive, I'd consider one as a pet! :D LOL They are just absolutely stunning! If not a little prehistoric looking! ;)

Our local bird place has a black palm. I dont believe he is for sale, I'm sure he is the store owner's bird. He has to be the ugliest and most boring bird I've ever seen honestly. He NEVER moves other than to eat. Never makes a sound. I say these things not knowing his past though. Matter of face, no one does. I'm not 100% sure how the owner came to acquire him but he doesn't know how old he is or anything about him.

I suppose beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, then. I've always thought black palm cockatoos were absolutely beautiful.
