which parrot breed ? what are your experiences with your parrots ?

i fell in love with the chattering lory , and the eclectus parrot , i also like the conures and blue fronted amazons a lot ! i just have no idea which breed to take ...
i like birds the size of the amazon , is the chattering lory around the same size ?
or the eclectus ?
and which breed is "cuddly"
i have lots of time for a parrot , and plan on training it (flighted as well )
what are your experiences with these breeds , and which ones do you recommend ,
you can also recommend other breeds ( i do not mind special diets )
i would like an intelligent parrot , medium to large , cuddly , i know a parrot varies from parrot to parrot , but i would like to hear the experiences you have had with some of the breeds
and i know a perfect parrot doesnt exist , but i know that the parrot i will pick will be perfect for me , doesnt matter what breed , i would just like a breed that is affectionate
i like rainbow lorikeets as well , but they are a little small arnt they ?
anyway , i would just love to hear your experiences with the parrot breds you have
(specially someone with a chattering lory , not a lot of people seem to have them , and they really caught my eye )

Re: which parrot breed ? what are your experiences with your parrots ?

Lories and lorikeets aren't super popular probably because of their liquid messy poops? They have a specialized diet too.

Keep in mind from asking others or reading, you can only get general characteristics of a species (it's 'species' not "breed" as domestically bred animal varieties are called).
There are a lot of variables in individual personality. For example, I've had two Bronze Winged Pionus before, and Raven is SO different from the last one, they don't even act like the same species, let alone the same kind!

If your heart is not set on a particular species, I'd just go and see some birds and see what you like, and what likes you back! Good luck.

Even individual opinions will vary so the choice is up to you to make as you need to visit each individual bird you have it listed and see what grabs you. Just a reminder like it was mentioned already that Lory/Lorikeets are diet specific birds but so is the eclectus parrot. They need to be fed certain diet or they will not do well.

Re: Sun conures vs Jenday conures

Big thing from suns/jenday Vs green cheeks is the noise. Some people will say that gram for gram, the suns are loudest parrot out there for their size, and in my personal experience Jendays aren't that far behind.
Having cared for both(suns and Jendays) there's not many HUGE differences I can name. Every bird is unique and that's about it.
My green cheek is loud, but it's a more frequent loud in longer intervals but the volume isn't intense. Never had a complaint in my apartment. Both birds are playful, awesome in general and though suns are known to be the 'clown' conures, green cheeks are playful and have their own spunk!
Over all I can't say enough good things about all 3 birds. It's all about spending time with each of them and figuring out what works best for your lifestyle. :)

Same bird, different wing colors. That's about it. And I had both.

Love my Sunny, he's playful and at times, cuddly. My GCC is feisty and manipulative. They're both quite intelligent. Love them both. Good luck choosing. ;)

Re: Sun conures vs Jenday conures

In my experience (I have worked with sun, jenday and gcc) is that there are better conure species out there. I love the halfmoon, dusky and larger conures. They seem to be as sweet and playful without the in yourface attitude of a gcc and usually not screamers like suns, yes they can get loud but sun screams are something all their own'

Sun conure and Yellow sided green cheek
Re: Sun conures vs Jenday conures

the main difference between sun conures and jendays was the colour i thought, i mean i think it would depend on the individual bird in regards to exactly how loud the bird is. in many ways i find that our green cheek is more into noise pollution than our sun conure, sure the sun conure is loud but he's only occasionally loud, where as the green cheek is frequently loud.

Re: Sun conures vs Jenday conures

Like Birdman666 said, Suns and Jendays are pretty much the same with the exception of wing color. They can be very sweet and affectionate, but I agree with javi that there are "better" conure species, although that's obviously very subjective and really depends on what qualities you're looking for. If you want a conure that will talk and be quick to pick up on any training and tricks you choose to teach it, then I wouldn't recommend a Sun or Jenday. The halfmoon and dusky conures already mentioned are good choices as are the larger conures like a Nanday (although I *might* be a bit biased since I have a 1 yr old Nanday that has an excellent vocabulary which expands on a daily basis and catches on to everything very quickly).

Re: Sun conures vs Jenday conures

Yeah there isn't much difference other than coloring each individual bird is gonna have its own personality of course. My Jenday can an occasion be very loud but not very often, he's mostly sweet, cuddly and affectionate. He loves to always be on my shoulder or cuddled up under my neck. He's a quick learner too he's about 3 1/2 months old and is potty trained and already says a few words. When I was looking the gcc seemed to be so much more playful and have so much more personality but that's not the case now, my Jenday entertains all of us with the things he does. Just spend some time with them I'm sure you'll know what the right choice for you is. Good luck in your quest hope you let us know what you choose!

Re: Sun conures vs Jenday conures

My jenday is also very affectionate and quick to pick up on tricks. She is also potty trained and can do a few basic tricks herself. She does give the occasional scream when she is happy or feeling ignored but she is not anywhere near as loud as other birds I have come across. However, I think personality varies from bird to bird! Once you find a bird that "picks you" it doesn't matter what specific breed they are! :) good luck!

Well, that kinda depends on whose training the conure! The best conure I ever had was my little Sun. The bird inside my shirt.

ALL CONURES make good trick birds... they really do seem to have the tempernment for it, and enjoy the interaction.

I respectfully disagree. But we all have our favorites.

Re: nanday vs jenday ?

Though they're from different conure families, from what I've heard about both, I think they're probably very similar, with a typical basic 'conure' personality, with the differences being mainly between individuals.

I think both Nanday's and Jenday's are some of the prettiest parrots. Nandays are one of my favorite (looks). Roughly the same size, it seems like the Nandays I see look a bit longer shaped in the body maybe? Not a significant size difference.

They're both very loud. Jendays are about 12 inches in length and weigh about 125-140g. Nandays are 13-15 inches in length and weigh about 140g. I'm voting for the Nanday. :)

Re: nanday vs jenday ?

I actually have a Nanday and a Jenday and I love them both of course, but if I had to recommend just one of them, it would be the Nanday. As has already been mentioned, Nandays are a little bit larger and have a slightly different build . Nandays have much more potential as far as talking and learning tricks. They're both considered to be among the loudest of the conures, and my experience with other species is pretty limited, but from what I've actually seen as well as read about the experience of other owners I think it's generally true. Out of my own two, Buddy the Jenday is much louder, but I only adopted him recently and he's still settling into the new environment which might be a contributing factor.
