Hi,

I am a new member who is interested in getting a parrot in the future. I live with my mom, who has general allergies, which include sensitivity to cat dander.

I would appreciate it if the members could tell me the types/names of parrots that might be good for people who have allergies.

Thanks in advance for your feedback to my question! :)

Well, there's several types of birds who do NOT produce feather dust.

However some species to look out for or stay away from would be Cockatiels, Cockatoos, and African Greys. Those species are particularly dusty and can be difficult for a person who has allergies.

Other than that there's a surprisingly large amount of species who don't produce dust.. Amazons, Pionus, Poi(I think?), Conures, etc... Really you could make a list of species you're interested in and then search those in specific to see if they produce feather dust or oil. And I'm sure there's tons of info on how people with allergies live with those birds.

I suffer from allergies to cats and am somewhat asthmatic(mostly with allergies) and I have two conures and a pionus and they don't affect them at all. :)

My son is pretty severely asthmatic (allergic to dust, cats, and pretty much every plant that grows in Arizona). We have two conures and an eclectus and he has no problem with them.

We do keep a filter in the bird room and his bedroom (for his general safety and just to keep the air in there fresh), but he's fine even when he is snuggling birds on the couch or something.
