I posted in the health forum about a week ago REALLY concerned about Chubby's overgrown beak. I'm a bit of a hypochondriac so everything from liver disease to beak and feather disease was running through my mind.

It was a four hour ride to get to the avian vet. Chubby was carsick most of the way but I got him some ginger for the ride home and he ate a bit of pumpkin/carrot baby food before we took off, so he was fine after.

As for the vet visit, my partner came with me. The avian vet was VERY nice. He said the crack in Chubby's beak very well could have been caused by the manner in which the previous vet (not an avian vet, because I'm stupid and listened to a friend's recommendation) attempted to clip his beak.

Poor Chubby was so scared when I handed him to the vet assistant so she could hold him while the vet dremmeled his beak. I actually started crying. I know, the vet and everyone must have thought I was REALLY stupid, but I just hate seeing him so scared.

The vet trimmed his lower beak VERY nicely and now it's back down to a normal length. He did not want to do blood work that day since Chubby looked REALLY worked up. He did check Chubby's feather condition, weight, eyes, nose, etc and concluded there's no reason to think he would have beak and feather disease. So that leaves either a beak deformity, him not chewing, or liver problems as the cause of his beak being overgrown.

I have another appointment in three weeks for a re-check. Depending on how that goes we will consider blood work at that time. For now he said to encourage him to chew (which he has been doing), and to try to lower the protein content in his diet (he was getting nuts every morning and was getting hard boiled egg as a treat a few times a week.

All in all it went well, despite me embarrassing myself lol.

I am so happy that several of your concerns have been answered. You are furtunate to have found such a dedicated avian veterinarian for Chubby (aside from the long drive :( )
Don't fret about showing such emotion towards your pet, I'm sure everyone was touched by your loving bond with your bird :)
