They're pretty but the only two I've met don't like other birds

Re: Can someone tell me about Red Bellied Parrot?

I have had my Red Bellied parrot for 20 years!
Robin just had his birthday about a month ago. He is hands down the best bird I've ever had. He's really a go-with-the-flow kind of guy. Doesn't hold grudges, easy going, doesn't act spoiled (although he is ).

Robin can be held and picked up in any way, he can be touched anywhere on his body. He's very cuddly and sweet. He is also HIGHLY independent, and can self-entertain for days if he had to. That is a very unusual trait in a bird who is also that cuddly.

Robin does talk, but he's better at mimicking noises. Some words he uses appropriately and in context. Red Bellied parrots and their relatives (Poicephalus family) are quiet birds. Some people may say they're loud, but I think they mean that they can make a high piercing whistle as their loudest call, but in comparison to other birds of their size, it's not "loud" as far as volume for a parrot goes.

Red Bellied (and all Poicephalus parrots) have extremely soft feathers, softer than most other parrot species. I love petting and cuddling those super soft feathers

One potentially 'negative' thing I will disclose, is that while ALL Poicephalus are feisty, the Red Bellied males really have a reputation... A reputation as a very formidable biter as a mature adult. I will say this is true. All Poicephalus parrots have a pretty assertive attitude, and they have an extra-large head and beak for the size of their body as compared to other birds. They are very hard biters. You can train a problem biter, but once a parrot is mature, even a well trained one will bite at certain times due to raging hormones during that time of year. These African parrots many times show very little to no noticeable warning body language signals prior to a bite. A real quick eye pinning which is easy to miss might be the ONLY signal you get.

I love my boy like I've never loved an animal before. In fact I just really love the whole Poicephalus genus. Besides individual personality, they're all pretty similar no matter which kind of Poicephalus you choose.

Re: Can someone tell me about Red Bellied Parrot?

i will tell you about my 17 year old Red Belly Parrot. She is basically a one person bird but she has formed bonds with several other people but only allows them to do certain things. She allows me to touch her anywhere. She is a very good talker and also very good at communication period. She is able to convey her meaning and has a good understanding of what I say to her. She is very cuddly and has a big personality. She is independant but needs a lot of close time and a lot of physical touch. She play fights with me and flips unside down and expects me to catch her...lol..She loves to go for rides in the car and gets so excited when I tell her we are going...lol.she has been nippy with some people but has never bitten me.
