Not really a club I wanted to be in, but I took a bite tonight that drew blood from my little Illiger's......was like a needle stab.

Things were going good then he got cranky so I was going to get him to step up from his perch and go back inside and I guess he had other ideas.

1 step forward, 3 back...

I should add that my post may seem like I'm discouraged, I'm not. I know it's going to take time and that there will be set backs.....all part of building life long relationship.

Ouch! So sorry you got a nasty bite from your buddy!

You are among friends! :) I'm afraid it's a very large club.

I commend you for handling it so well and keeping a positive attitude. I'm sure it helps that your Loki is absolutely adorable.

It's by no means an exclusive club...

We generally accept anyone who owns a bird!

Dear Weezerj,

Welcome! Congratulations on becoming the 'newest' victi... I mean, bona fide member of the 'owned by a parrot' club! I see you found our "initiation ritual" both painful and bloody. Good! We like it that way:18:

Sincerely,

:green2: :yellow2: :green1: :yellow1: :green: :red1: :blue: :rainbow1:

[All jokes aside, it sounds like Loki is moving into a 'testing' phase of his training and socialization, and wants to see how far he can push you, how he can push you and what reaction he receives. Now is the time to be consistent with your reaction to bad behavior and to really step up praise and rewards for good behavior. Hope your hand feels better today]

Yep. Pretty much!

That was macaw for "I don't wanna!"

Right now I'm still dealing with CAG for "I don't wanna."

So it doesn't ever completely go away.

Once you've been initiated you are a member for life.

That's a club most parrot owners are bound to join at one time or another. My pionus nailed me on the finger a couple months ago, usually he is very calm and I can literally do whatever I want with him. Touch him all over, etc. Never had a bite till then. But, we had company over, and I didn't realize my "normal speed" movements were too fast when strangers were near. My fault for not watching, and of course, as soon as I stuck my hand in front of his face, BAM! Latched on, beak grinding. All is forgiven of course, but I'm much more aware now :p

You've seen the exorcist right? That little girl was absolutely adorable...until she wasn't

I knew he "didn't wanna" and I reached anyway....stupid me. I should have let him calm down first. Lesson learned (the hard way)

And then last night lets me scratch his head/neck for a very long time, something he has never really allowed before.....I feel like I am on a roller coaster ride with this guy.

I am leaving for a week to visit family in the Midwest and his former foster parents are going to watch him...I sure hope I don't lose whatever progress I've made to this point by being separated for a week.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Just remember that all birds are capable of biting, sometimes hard! Even the sweetest and most tame of parrots can surprise!
