Feathers

When Buddy and Venus loose feathers, I like to save them. I thought it would be interesting to look at their feathers side by side because they are so different. For those that haven't seen an eclectus, their feathers look like hair, so that's the main idea here. Buddy is my Green Cheek Amazon (Mexican Red Head), and Venus is my Solomon island eclectus. Buddy is very green, the larger black feather with green is his and is a wing tip, the second green feather is a tail feather.

The grayish feathers with red are Venus'. She hasn't dropped larger feathers just yet, but they look like a hairy feather, lol. So if anyone ever wondered what an ekkies feather looks like to make them look hairy, here you go.

Nice display! Ekkie feathers are indeed unique.

I have one Goffin who likes to snuggle up to Angel and preen the feathers on her upper body. She doesn't exactly appreciate the effort! She'll tolerate about 2 minutes and snarl!

I save a good portion of my birds feathers too, especially from my BFA who went through quite the transformation while I had him. I also still have feathers from my GCC and I put them in her cremation box.

I thought about doing a small art piece at some point with the feathers so I can hang them up!

Oh WOW! You got me at your GCC's feathers, that is a fantastic idea. I started saving Buddy's feathers so the kids could touch them and feel how soft they were, get some touch experience without Buddy's beak interfering. Right now I store them in a box and haven't decided what to do with them yet.

i completely agree. Ekies feathers in my opinion are the softest and best to the touch of the parrots. your birds look so cute!

We save all of our feathers here, as well as our chickens feathers for our daughter who makes really pretty hair clips and jewelry with them. She also has a friend with a macaw who saves his for her as well.

We also collect the feathers and have Dream Catchers made from the feathers of our Amazons who pass. Each tell a story of the Amazon and our time with them. Some are thin of feather, other much thicker, others show feather stress patterns caused by their illnesses. But all tell the story of why We love Amazons. Love is never felt so warmly than when provided by a rehomed parrot.
