Bonded buddies calling each other by name - cute story

Cute stories of my boys calling each other by name - I thought this was so adorable I had to share. It not only warms my heart to hear it, but it's hilarious and still makes me laugh or at least smile every time. It never gets old.

Lately, while still under his bedtime cover in the morning, usually the first sound Griffin makes is repeatedly calling his friend by name. "Raven, Raven, Raaaven? Raven??" In a tone of voice as if to say 'are you there Raven, answer me!' He has the most adorable little kid sort of voice. Of course sleepy head Raven in the next cage over never answers lol.

The other day, I witnessed the cutest thing... it was in the evening when Raven and Griffin play together in and around their cages. Although Griffin calls Raven, this is the first time I heard it the other way around, Raven calling Griffin! It was so funny... I heard "Griffin... Griffin, Griffin!, Griffin!!" Then I happened to look, and as soon as Raven caught up with Griffin, he started feeding him! Raven was calling Griffin to come over so he could feed him ROTFL !!

I only wish I could have had that on camera. This was definitely one of those precious moments. I used to try to discourage the feeding, but I usually don't catch them in time, and all I see is their beaks pulling away from each other with slimy lips lol. I can't stop them I guess. Anyone else have parrots who feed one another? Curiously, it is ALWAYS Raven feeding Griffin, and never the other way around. I wonder how their roles got established that way? Maybe because Griffin is a little younger?

I haven't posted pics of the two friends in a while (I'll have to add pics a little later) but many of you know that Raven and Griffin are a bonded couple (both boys). Definitely an odd couple, Raven is a BW Pionus who's ancestors come from the high altitude mountain forests in parts of South America. Griffin is a Ruppell's parrot from the plains of South Africa. An uncommon relative of the Senegal and Poicephalus family. Raven is twice as large and heavy as Griffin is, but they are a couple nonetheless.

I always love hearing stories about your birds. How cute they are!

Someday maybe Zilla will like another bird... (sigh)

This picture is fairly recent, but it is special, because Griffin is now wild. He has developed a phobia particular to Poicephalus. It coincides with the age in which they become more independent in the wild. Long story short, he's about as "tame" as an aviary bird who is accustomed to the caretaker. He will very occasionally be brave enough to get on my hand as long as I don't touch him. Though he prefers sitting on my shoulder on the right side, then will fly off when he starts getting uncomfortable. He will stay fully flighted for this reason. I think having his friend there with him gave him courage . One day when it becomes feasible, I'd like to have him (with Raven) cage free in an indoor aviary or a completely converted room.

Awww, what an adorable story! And it's about time we got more pics of your boys, and i agree with Allee about needing some Robin ones too

Thanks April, I was hoping youd see this . I love their colors too, Griffin still has more yellow to get on his shoulders. He's almost 2. I think with one or two more molts he'll have twice as much yellow on the shoulders. He's really pretty flying when you can see more flashes of yellow from under his wings.

Thanks Allee, I might as well post pics of the rest of the flock too huh? Robin looks the same in all his photos, he isn't super active. I need to catch him "doing" something lol.

It's amazing not only because of their extremely different genetic backgrounds, but also that most Pois hate other birds. Griffin might just be different. I'm not sure how other Ruppell's are, but Griffin is so social that he is even interested in Robin the other Poi. I have to be careful with those two because we don't need to see anymore of Griffin's blood, and the kid never learns.

You've never seen a Red Bellied Parrot? Whaaat?! It's Griffin the Ruppell's who's rare, the Red Bellieds are around. There are other RBs here too.

Just catching this thread, Lady Jules! Thank you for treating us to updated pics of your flock! I'm especially thrilled with the Robin pic. I like all of your little guys, but I have a real soft spot for him.

They're all looking so beautiful and healthy, my friend. You obviously take wonderful care of them.

Yeah, that lampshade lol. Griffin almost never has a poop accident.. I think he's just one of those birds who are particular to want to use certain bathroom areas even never having being taught. Still, I need to do something with that lamp LOL. I mean it's old and not valuable, but if he starts chewing it, there might be non bird safe components on it, and you know how I can't trust Griffin. The room needs a makeover again.
