I was laughing earlier today because of Shiko's ability to understand context. He was trying to splash around in Avery's water bowl, and so I mentioned to my boyfriend that he wanted a shower. As soon as I said it, he hopped out and gave me this quirky little look, so I decided to try and see how good his understanding was and said, "Shiko, if you want a shower come here". He immediately flew to my shoulder and started trying to use me as a bathing tool (as shown is this video here: [ame="http://youtu.be/mnAykSCFrsM"]March 14, 2016 - YouTube[/ame]). Needless to say he was happily soaked 10 minutes later!

Both birds also respond to "treat", and if Shiko wants one he'll say, "D'ya wanna treat?". It's pretty adorable [emoji4]

So what words do your birds respond strongly to?

Oh my gosh, Chantal, that is absolutely ADORABLE!!!!!! INSTA-SMILE!! :D Shiko is GORGEOUS, and boy did he ever want that bath, hey?

All of mine have several words (sentences actually) that'll get them going. The ones that pop in my head straight away are:

- Wanna come out and play?
- Let's check it out.

:)

Thanks, Wendy! He's definitely a bath fiend. When my boyfriend came to grab him from me, Shiko kept trying to crawl back in with me. It was hilarious! I think it's because he's about to moult again soon, which means bald Ringneck for the next few weeks, hahaha.

I can only imagine the visible excitement on a macaw's face when something reaaallllyyyy piques their interest. Ripley and Niko must be a hoot! (Or perhaps a very loud screech? [emoji16])

Ha! How cute!

Hahaha, thanks Karen! He's nowhere near the ridiculous cuteness level of Zoe, but he certainly has a dorky factor about him. Probably one of the few Ringnecks I know of that demands cuddles every single day for at least half an hour. And showers. And, well, treats too. Talking birds are a bit demanding [emoji39]

Just curious if there is a biological maturing a young CAG needs to do before talking? Is there a stage of development they must reach before they can mimic our words and voices? Is their syrinx capable of supporting such talking at a young age?

My Perjo is 15 weeks old. She's been stepping up for over a month, been mimicking a few of my whistles and noises for about 3-4 weeks. Today she was making sounds I've not heard from hear before, that kind of sound like part of a word, but not necessarily. Just curious is its kind of how it goes with them, do they start mumbling the words like a kid? Or is talking completely related to individual personality of each bird?

I think Shiko is equally cute, just in a different way. Zoe hates water and bathes so I think it's awesome!

DRB, I think it just depends on the bird. Shiko was talking at 5 months of age (20 weeks old). Some are very quick to talk, others not so much. Some also may pick up specific sounds opposed to actual "words".

And thanks, Karen! He makes me giggle. I'm surprised Zoe hates baths! It almost seems like macaw blasphemy [emoji33] She could learn a thing or two from Shiko [emoji6]

Thanks for the reply.

I keep hearing that, and completely trust that analysis but was curious is there was anything more "scientific" behind it.

You would have to start looking at behavioural, psychological, or perhaps neurological papers and journals on speech development that use parrots, specifically on the AG parrot. There isn't much research like that I believe, but you may perhaps be able to research "Alex" and see if the research group that focused on him produced any information regarding speech development at particular stages. The only thing is that he was around a year or so (I think?) when he was purchased and studies were conducted with him.

For Kyo, "WANNA GO SEE NANNY?! WANNA GO TO NANNY'S HOUSE?!"

That's so sweet! I wish I had more places to take my birds that they were familiar with. It's so cute that Kyo loves going over there [emoji4]

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Let's see... Hmmm...

"Wanna go outside?"
or "Wanna go for a walk?"
or "Wanna go in the tree?"
or "Wanna come?"

Actually, with Maggie and Sally, just picking up the car keys is frequently enough to do it... (sometimes they just assume...)

"Who wants a french fry?"

[There are a number of variables with this one substitute the words french fry for Pizza, chicken, fish, or just about anything else they see me eating.)

Ha, Karen calls it a "pizza bone." Our previous grey, Beau, would get super excited hearing that one.

Mine freaks when I say "almond" or "nutriberry." He also has a cow and wants to attack if I say "tickle tickle tickle". Not sure why he freaks when I say that... I got him at 4 months old. Not sure why that gets him, it always has.

Loved that video, Chantal! Now THAT is a bird who loves her baths!

Jolly loses his mind whenever I approach his cage saying, "Whatcha say, Mr. Jay, whatcha say?" Just this stupid thing I've taken to saying whenever I'm about to open his cage, but he loves it.

Also if I ask him if he's ready, because he knows that means flight training is about to begin.

For Maya? She loses her mind no matter what word comes out of my mouth. Lol!

Me walking in the house and saying " hey babies" usually sets the whole flock off. With MsJakiepoo it's " wanna go?" or "shower time". I have 3 JRTs who love to chase squirrels, they go crazy if i tell them "there's a squirrel in your yard" of course MsJakiepoo goes crazy too and chases them out the dog door. Kind of funny really. I guess she thinks everyone is part of the flock.

Haha this is too cute. My blue and gold responds to "you wanna fly?" And "ready, set, go?" Which is her cue to fly. When I ask if she wants to fly she always responds with a scream. It's pretty cool.

My YCM knows what my treat jar looks like. So he goes crazy when I take it out.
