He Won't Come Out Of His Cage

Buzz is a new addition to our flock and once he went in his large cage, he hasn't come out. He's a Congo African Grey, I haven't been able to take his cage outside to wash it down, lots of wiping going on but I have been working with Buzz multiple times a day after seeing a training video and so far, great progress so I wanted to share for anyone else that has a parrot that won't come out.

What I've been doing is standing at Buzz's opened cage door, and feeding him sunflower seeds one by one, each time I give him a seed, I make him come closer to the door. Now, the smart little stinker caught on quick as to what I was doing and quickly wouldn't come past the halfway mark, lol. However working with him daily, he is steadily coming closer to the door and he was growling a lot at me, but that me has stopped. In fact when I head to his cage with his sunflower seeds, he has started moving closer to door in anticipation of getting his treat. I also have been mixing up his treats including chopped fruit. He loves grapes, all my fids do, but I will chop them up and give him little pieces so be sure to switch it up!

My White Fronted Amazon was the same when I got him...I remember I taught him to step up onto a perch while he was inside his cage...later (and it took a while ) as I left the door open for him with a rope perch stretching from inside to the bars of the open door...make sure your door isnt one of those spring shut doors...if it is you will need to secure it well ...my boy eventually came out to explore the outer bars of the cage and so will Buzz...it took ages before my WFA did this...the cage is their safe place and eventually they do come out to explore but it does take a while...Buzz will begin to explore when he is ready.

Our DYH Amazon dislikes a closed cage door so much that if closed, he will disassemble the cage. First day with him, reassembled the cage twice. After the second time, left the door open and its never been closed since.

Our past YNA, was a cage dominate Amazon and would close the door behind her when she went in. Removed the upper (top) cage panel (slide-out for easy cleaning), which left the top open. Not sure if that would work with your parrot, but for her it changed the sense of separation provide by a fully intact cage.
