So, as many know, I'm fairly new here. Stephen my conure joined me about 2 months ago and I joined to figure out what he was so bity. (Cuz he had to POOP! You all helped me learn how to communicate with him and now he's the friendliest non-bity bird ever!)

A friend of mine who works with Peregrine Falcons alerted me to another bird that desperately needed a new home. And being a sucker for animals in need I picked up Romeo yesterday.

He's a 12 year old B&G Macaw. And is currently screaming his fool head off as I right this. Turns out, quoting Romeo and Juliet to him helps.

The situation he came out of was a very loving home but ill equipped for him. They were feeding him a diet of lunch meat, french fries and some cheap blend of bird seed and what appears to be Fruit Loops. Never anything in the world of fruits or veggies.

His home was a very unclean cage that's surprisingly large enough for him. (For now... I have room enough for much larger later.) He has 1 toy and his only perch is a PVC pipe. He was living with 6 small kids, 5-7 dogs, umpteen cats/kittens and spent most of his time on his play stand on the cage.

Despite all of that he actually looks very good. Obviously step 1 is to get him on a better diet. He's currently sharing some Roudybush of Stephens and has a variety of fresh veggies in his dish. For now I'm leaving him mostly alone and letting him settle in. I'll get him a better food soon.

His cage got thoroughly cleaned last night with dish soap in the bathtub so that's better... but honestly, it hadn't been cleaned for a year or two.

He knows a few words, and, funnily enough, the correct context in which to use Mother F*#&er. The 4am "helloooo" was surprising.

This wasn't how I wanted to do this but sometimes life hands you a choice and you have to make the right call. So I'm gonna have questions. Lots and lots of questions. I've been doing research and all the birds just out of curiosity so I didn't jump blind.

So welcome to Romeo!

Romeo is gorgeous! I am so glad you added him to your family, and I am looking forward to many updates about him.

Oh he's so gorgeous! I hope he learns to quote some Romeo and Juliet, it would be hilarious. It's great that he was able to find you and be welcomed into your home. I look forward to hearing more in the future :)

Wow, hes a beautiful B&G! If my life permitted I would love to bring one into my life. You should bring him to an avian vet for a checkup to get bloodwork done to make sure everything is alright, and that beak needs a good trimming! Good luck with him, I hope it goes nice and smooth!

He looks great! Glad you could give him a more bird appropriate home. And using MF in the correct context (for me at least) is hysterically funny! (I am just a large child hahaaha)

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Romeo looks surprisingly good, thanks for taking him! I completely agree with your assessment of diet, but even more so your notion of letting him first acclimate. He's been through a lot and will settle into a far better home!!

Yeah, he has an appointment this Friday. I have the day off for no real reason so it was a good time.

Thankfully my regular vet also does birds. It's a great place. They have someone who understands the exotics, someone that can do greyhounds (cuz those beautiful dogs have some weird blood chemistry issues) and all the rest.

I've given them a head's up on his crap diet and the beak trim. Poor guy can't even close his mouth!

Yeah, I'm OK with it. I live alone and don't have kids.

He also spent about 5 minutes screeching yesterday. And then silenced himself by saying "Shut the f*&% up"

So clearly people have been talking to him. Just not exactly well.

Um, wow!...

Right? What have I done!? (I mean besides giving him a home that will take the time to care for him and figure out what he needs.)
