Keeping your fid warm

I read a great article in a magazine about keeping parrots warm while the heating kicks in lol.

It's very simple and anyone can do it.

Take a clean sports sock, fill it 3/4 full of plain white rice and tie the end. Microwave it for about 1min 30secs and squish rice evenly to distribute the heat around. When it's cool enough for you to comfortably handle, put it in the bottom of the cage and cover it over with clean cotton t-shirts. The heat rises nicely and you've a bird safe hot water bottle until the heating fires up!

It's SO simple! We even BUY these things over here for humans!!! Great for ladies troubles and sore shoulders! Next time, I'll just make one and Cal and I can share it!!!!

Thankyou Von, this is incredibly helpful. The vet said that if Eddie's feathers continue to thin, I will need to make sure I find ways to keep him warm, so this is fantastic.

We have some of the people ones too, nothing better after a long days work than to warm them up in the microwave and heat your pain away lol. Silly buggers that make them put artificial fragrances in them though, so they are no good for birds

. Home made one sounds like a great idea!

I had to put mine away before Cal had out time and I can't believe I didn't of it lol.

Not me! My parrot and iguana and bearded dragons and snakes and tarantulas and dogs as well.

All with sport socks and tights wrapped around their heads - AS YOU SUGGESTED!

About keeping birds warm in the winter. It seems every winter we have someone here who has lost power and there are few to no ways to keep your bird warm. Think about it almost everything we warm them with is plugged in. It is scary when the power is off and your home gets below 60 degrees.

Another thing you can do is boil a pot of water, make sure the cage is closed and they have no way of reaching the ANTI TEFLON pot to burn themselves. Place the pot beside the cage with a blanket over the top covering the pot and the cage or part of the cage. Great for humidity too!!!

In South Africa they call it load shedding, they switch your electricity off for hours on end. (Impossible to give the reasons without bringing up politics.)
We had to buy a generator to keep the reptiles warm during those times and I have 2 gas heaters as well. The worst is when the electricity goes off after we've gone to bed and when I get to Forest in the morning he is ICE COLD STIFF.

So if you sit without power constantly in winter then it is best to invest in a generator and gas heaters. The generator is expensive but I cant imagine a life without it. Especially when everybody else are surrounded with darkness and I sit with a warm cup of tea watching tv with piece of mind that everybody in the house are warm.

Oh Linky....such tough times

We had a really bad power cut last year before we had Cal. It was just OUR building and it lasted 14hrs in the winter! Not good! The sea monkeys I bought for Dave for his bday didn't survive

Luckily it was all furries otherwise and they were fine - warmer than us! With regards to Cal, I think her snuggle hut is invaluble.

We have a little gas stove and when I found out about the "sock warmer" I thought it was great as I'm sure the effect would be the same if I had to actually boil the rice and I could use several socks at one time lol. I might use a lot of rice but we have a lot and if it keeps Cal warm that's what matters!

Here we use a gas-braai, do you guys know a gas-braai? Especially used inside Kruger for bacon and eggs while watching elephants passing so close that the wind from flapping their ears are felt........

Here in Tn we sometimes get ice storms in the winter. It will knock the power out.
We have a pellet stove but it takes electricity for the auger to run.

I make the rice heating packs for adults all the time. But you can used crushed herbs like rosemary and thyme to make them smell good. Lavender is nice too. Just throw a handful in before you seal them. It also makes your house smell great.

Maybe I analyze things to much or think to much of doom and gloom, but was thinking of how my birds act, if anything was in the bottom of cage with my RB2's they would chew it to pieces, if they ever got to the raw rice in the sock
