Canary wing Bee Bee
I'm looking for some advice from you experienced bird lovers. I have owned a green cheek conure years ago raised with my small children dog cat .... then I owned a cockatiel .... I'm seeking a bird now after many years without one. I'm looking for a family bird not a big bird. I saw a canary wing bee bee they are adorable. Conures are too loud. Maybe there is a specific conure that's less noisy. Was thinking lovebird but a breeder told me they tend to be a one person bird. Not really wanting a cockatiel again. Preferably a male. Can you guys help me with suggestions.

Well, you need to have realistic expectations, and pick a species whose "cons", rather than "pros", you can tolerate. Great for you if the bird turns out to be the perfect angel, but you need to stick with a bird who turns out to be a devil (with proper socialization and training, most birds can become great companions). I recommend going to some parrot rescues and familiarize yourself with the different parrots there. At rescues, what you see is what you get, because almost all of them have already gone through the terrible twos. Adopt, don't buy.

As for small "family" birds, we have budgies, kākāriki, parrotlets, mini macaws, caiques, linnies, pionus... I know a lot of people don't appreciate budgies, but they're great little guys. Before getting a bird, you should do tons of research, regardless of previous experience.

Having had a Canary Wing Bee Bee parrot before ( Max), I think they are great family birds. They are known in the wild to actually seek out human company and used to be the #1 imported parrot before the ban on importation. Like most any parrot, a lot goes into training as far as sociability but lots of family time, playting pass the birdy does the trick.
Like any parrot, they CAN be loud at times and these lttle guys have temper tantrums occasionally, which can be amusing, but loud. Max loved scratches from anyone, and would fall asleep in your hand or neck crook etc sometimes. When he passed , I thought about getting another one,but it was painful to see them. And Salty picked me .

BeeBee are small so a smaller cage can be used, dont eat as much as larger birds. BeeBees think they are the size of macaws and are fearless. Max used to bully our cairne terrier and tried to boss around cockatoos and Amazons when he went to the pet shop for a clip or trim. They dont talk well usually, but can do whistles as well as cockatiels and Maxie knew a bunch of tunes.

Max 'picked' me too. He came right up to me out of a bunch of BeeBees, hoped onto my hand, looked up at me and gave me a wolf whistle. SOLD!

Good luck!

I agree on the Canary Wing Bee Bee, they are wonderful birds. I hate to admit this, but I went into a Petco that I have never been in about a month ago to get crickets for my beardie, and they had a bee bee parrot! I'd never seen one in a Petco. I watched it coming to the glass at me, so the girl got him out...He was just a little baby...I almost brought him home, I had to force myself to walk away! Seriously though I've never heard anything bad about them from anyone that has had them, only wonderful things to say.

The other that came up yesterday and that I haven't thought about for a thousand years is a Regents Parrot, or Rock Pebbler. They are actually very similar to the Bee Bee in size, looks, personality, etc. Both make great family pets.

I tend to really like pionus (can you tell? :) They can be family birds, fairly quiet, can talk, and can entertain themselves. I didn't care for cockatiels, not because of their personalities so much as how skittish and flighty they were (night frights). I love, lovebirds, but wouldn't call them a family bird.

I just got a parrotlet and the little bugger is adorable and so much fun. He bit a lot in the beginning but as he has gotten used to being here that has phased out. I live alone so not sure how "family" oriented he would be.

I have a green cheek conure and he is not very loud at all in fact my budgie was way more vocal. The conure occasionally makes noise but usually just to get my attention my budgie was constantly making noise. Both are great pets but from my limited experience I wouldn't be put off a green cheek because of noise.

They love to eat dinner with the family, try to find a spot for his cage near the dinner table, it will make him feel like a member of the family. Oh he's so cute!! I miss MAXIE!!

Congratulations! He's adorable. Honestly if I ever see another baby Canary Wing I will probably bring him home, they are such good little birds. Unfortunately I just never see them near me, that one last month at Petco was the very first. Enjoy!

They are like mini Amazons in a lot of ways. I suggest you read the pinned threads in the Amazon forum, out loud as advisedl. What did you decide on for a name?

Paco. Nice. Welcome Paco! BeeBees while they dont usualy talk much ( Maxie only learned a few words) can whistle well. Max knew the 1812 Overture, The Minuette opening, Andy Griffith, a whole bunch of stuff. Thats how he picked me. He jumped onto my finger, looked me in the eye and wolf whistled. Max loved playing in and with water and had definite udeas abuout which stone were acceptable in our little tabletop waterfall . They are flock birds, so his contact call should be respected and returned . Here is a good pic of our little Maxie

Can you describe the contact call? He is really settling in very nicely - we are trying to figure out the different bird noises he makes

The 2 distictive calls Max had were his temper tantrum call ( quick arrppr, arrppr, arrppr, over and over - maybe 10-15 times, all while running back and forth on the bottom of his cage) and his contact call ( a short single high pitched bwreeep, but repeated every 10 seconds or so, until you showed up). Both shold be ignored especially the short high pitched one. Wait until he is quiet and over the tantrum, and then show him the love or food. They can be bribed with food, oh can they be bribed! And of course, BE CONSISTENT with anything. The idea is not to give him a treat to make him be quiet, its to let him be quiet and reward him for it. Get the difference?
