So I bought a new house and I'm converting one of the bedrooms as a room for my African grey (guest rooms are overrated :p lol). I took out the carpet and figured painting the concrete was easiest and cheapest. My friend suggested Ecos paint, a natural water based paint that she used on her walls for her nursery that has no VOCS or other nasty chemicals. I bought the Ecos floor paint, painted in December, and it's a disaster. The paint stains easily, is near impossible to wipe up messes, it's dingy no matter how much I steam mop and it's completley come off in several spots just from cleaning with my steam wipe/seventh generation wipes. I even put painters tape on the floor once to measure out a new stand I was getting her, and when I removed the tape it took off all the paint!

So I'm trying to find something else, something that is actually going to last and be safe for my Grey. I thought about installing vinyl planks but the cheapest quote i got to install was like 500 bucks. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm looking at Little Greene, Farrow and Ball, and Dulux, but I'm just not sure if any of them will hold up.

I have no suggestions, but I admire your caution and research, and I'll follow this thread just in case I'm ever in a similar situation.

Good luck!

Concrete and Paint is not a good combination as you have found to be true. It sounds like you missed 'one' of the most important steps in preparing any surface for painting: Sealing it with a multi coat of a high grade Primer.

If you are still leaning toward paint, I have bad news for you. You need to remove all the paint currently on the floor and start over.

At this point, you need to determine what direction you want go. Consider appearance, reasonable clean up time, value added or detracted from your home.

I would consider visiting the Flooring Section of a Big Box Store. I would not go on a Weekend, but would target late afternoon during or just prior to dinner time when the staff have time to walk you though the vast number of options available. DIY is a requirement if you want to keep your costs low and the quality of the material high.

Enjoy!
