I've been a bit busy to cruise the forum lately, but I had to post a funny story about Lucille, my galah's, first trip to my family's lake cabin.

It was the weekend, and I took Lucille with me to my family's lake cabin. It's literally a cabin, with no room for her "travel cage" (which is 3X3.5 feet) in the living room. Instead, I set her in the doorway to my bedroom, which looks into the living room, so she could see me or I could shut the door if she needed downtime. I am chilling with my parents and Lucy, who is used to a one person home, is being uber talkative (hey, we're talking, so why not her?), and I'm just ignoring her sqwacks and general chattering while my mom gets more and more disturbed looking. Finally my mom interrupts me and goes "Why is she screaming?! Is she okay?!"

Well, this just makes me laugh, because I am thinking "oh you poor non-parront. You think THIS is screaming? If she was screaming you would know it, because we wouldn't be able to talk over it!"

Lucille seems to take my laughter as a signal that she should fly right off her cage top perch to me, which results in my mom screeching at the sound of wings in flight and practically falling off the couch. Like dominoes, this makes Lucille decide this is perhaps not the best place to fly so she circles the room a couple of times before deciding to land on the edge of a painting--right behind my poor mother's head.

My dad and I are trying our best not to laugh, Lucille has this smug look going on like "look at mah super flying skills, y'all" and my mom looks like she's just swallowed, well, you know. Lucille starts to straighten her feathers after this exhausting flight, and I can't hold it in anymore--I start laughing, so she decides to come hang with her amused dad, starting the circle of horror once more.

Let's just say Lucille had to watch us from inside her cage for a while after that. :D. I'm still not sure my mom has recovered!

EDIT: And no worries about my mom! She really *has* recovered--there may have been some exaggeration in that story about how greatly she reacted; it just seemed like a cartoon to me watching! ;) She and Lucy are actually quite good friends--she has visited my parents' house several times and my mom holds her and scratches her head and stuff. Lucille's just so quiet and calm that my mom hadn't ever experienced her making much noise or flying to me before and it was quite a surprise to her how loud flying can sound in an enclosed space. :)

Ah poor mom. Tread carefully with this situation which probably is more born of fear. Get your mom to know Lucille properly, get to do step ups etc. There is a slim chance that things may improve on their own but take that initiative and go through some trust and bond building with them both. The more your mom is frightened the more Lucille with meet this with confusion and maybe eventually aggression.

Take care with her flying free in a new environment, accidents happen so easily. Good you had a good time though. :)

Thankfully she and my mom are actually already good buds! I think she was simply surprised by the kind of noise birds can make (both "talking" and the noise of the wings when flying!) My mother has handled my girl several times before (Lucille has been over to my parents' home), but Lucille is such a quiet bird that she'd never heard her making much noise and mom had never seen her fly to me before. It was quite a funny moment, though--everybody laughed about it afterward, including my mom! :)

That is good then :) Had a family member who had an unreasonable fear of birds, too much Alfred Hitchcock I think LOL? So good to hear Lucille is good and very happy :)

I can only imagine this scenario! Glad your mom is ok after being traumatized by Lucille;)

The slight exaggeration is the best part of the story!! I was giggling imagining the reaction... all I could think of was how my daughter reacts to a spider or me when we are outside and bats are flying around.

Glad your mom is okay, but it was a good laugh!! Even as a bird person, my daughter has an evil green turkey bird (Yellow Nape Amazon) that hates my husband and myself, he has flown across 2 rooms to try to 'kill' me, while someone suggested he be sent away to a sanctuary where he won't be a threat to people, I personally tell the story and laugh how I responded. He thought he was protecting his 'nest', and I heard the wings, but my little bare eye flies around the house all the time, it did not dawn on me that it wasn't my little white dust ball until Kelly literally hit me in the back! So, I can appreciate the humor in your story, but I can laugh at myself too with my off balance attempt to get Kelly off without being bit (and to add to the imaginary, I live with MS, so balance is not always my strong point)... in my attempt to get him off safely for both of us, I got off balance and it ended up in what I joke was a twirling and spinning dance of death :) Tho no one died, but it is now a funny story since no one ended up bleeding!

Thanks for sharing :)

Yeppers, same one.... big snakes, small snakes, everything in between... and man eating amazon vulture bird... but a tiny spider and she'll scream like a girl. I can try to video tape it for you... hopefully I can get it uploaded before she hacks my body into small pieces and feeds it to said Amazon vulture bird...

Great story, she'll hate me for sharing... but it is timeless classic funny.

Years ago when she had multiple horses they were boarded at a private farm and we took care of everything. One afternoon we were heading home and she has always been a bookworm, she had a book with her and we were driving in the pickup truck when she opened the book and there was a daddy long leg type spider in it... She literally threw the book one way (screaming the whole time) and tried climbing across me like she was gonna jump out the window - yes I was driving. Thankfully I did not run off the road... but we had to stop and sweep out the truck before she would get back into head home... needless to say I don't think she picked the book up rest of the drive...

Yeah, she can wrestle a 12 foot reticulated python who is hungry with a bad attitude, but a harmless little daddy long leg spider and she is like a cartoon character with the feet running but not moving anywhere :)
