Hello all,

Tomorrow morning is when Ollie and I travel from NYC to Seattle for a trip to see my family! It's about a 6 hour flight and we'll be flying on Alaskan Airlines. They do not require a vet health check certificate for in cabin birds but I got a 30 day one just in case. I called ahead and got his ticket all squared away too so they know he's flying with me. I'm so nervous and excited! I wonder how he'll react. We have taken him on many many long car rides and so hopefully he doesn't freak out. I hope they let me take him out of his carrier and cuddle him. Wish me luck!

-Desi

The only thing you might have to worry about is some motion sickness. When a bird is in control they are immune but riding in a car on a long trip he might try to puke a little. Other than that nothing on the trip should hurt him, just make sure he has plenty of food and water. A plane can be dehydrating. Also germs, so keep him away from people in the filthy plane and airport till you get home. And no they won't care if you take him out for a bit....to cuddle. why would they.

Oh that's reassuring about the cuddling. I have him trained on a water bottle for trips so he won't get dehydrated. Ollie used to puke in the car but never does anymore so I hope he'll be okay on the plane.

Actually, some people freak out around birds. I don't know why. So be sure to ask your neighbors before you take him out. It's probably too late, but if you can quickly find Ollies paperwork, like vet records or best of all the records from when/where you got him, there are new CITES regulations about interstate transport of birds. SailBoat wrote up some good posts about this. Good luck!

good call kentuckienne make sure the people near you know 1) you have a bird 2) it's friendly 3) your taking it out. Most people are fascinated by birds and trained birds amaze them.....they should be ok with it...

I was on a plane with a guy with a cat carrier once, the cat almost escaped I was simply amused watching the battle of wills...

Good thing birds are much smarter than cats.

(2) All birds must be individually identified with a numbered leg band or in a manner appropriate to the species.

I took off my birds leg band after I got him...I'll just teach him to say "F- the police" if we have to fly anywhere I suppose. That is international currency. THUG LIFE!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Have a great flight!!!!

Be sure to ask a flight attendant first before taking Ollie out of the crate. Good idea also to ask seat-mates if they are comfortable.

Are his wings clipped? It is possible if given permission to remove he might be spooked by the unfamiliar surroundings.

Uggg I'm on the plane now and they said I can't take Ollie out of his carrier. That's pretty sad but at least I'm on the plane. He has yet to make a loud noise since we boarded. They did let me have him on my shoulder at the airport lounge so that was nice. The flight attendant said I can take him I to the bathroom and let him have some shoulder time. We'll see if I think it's sanitary enough or not.. if he starts screaming I'll definitely have to. Turning to airplane mode now... update to fallow!

I realize that this is humor, but the very thin Blue Line is very important to a very larger number of us out here in non THUG LIFE style. :D

Even if an Airline may or may not check whether you have the proper paper, last minute changes could have you flying with an other Airline. In addition, some States prohibit the entrance of some species. So, your Documentation will assure that someone does not confusion the species of your Parrot.

Enjoy your travels!

TBH I would want my bird to stay in his carrier, planes are not the cleanest modes of transport. Remember it is what you cannot see that is deadly!

I realize you are incognito as I post, but the lavs are rather disgusting. They are cleaned before flights, but just cosmetically so lots of invisible stuff lurks. Still, it might be the only place to take Ollie out if needed.

Hope all went well, will eagerly await an update when able!!

Yuk!

The typical lav-cleaning procedure between flights takes about 5 to 7 minutes. Clean up debris from the floor/counter, superficially wipe the sink/mirror/toilet, refill the consumables of TP, paper towel, tissues, and, uh, um, special little boxes for certain passengers, spray a deodorizer, voila! Fresh as a daisy. NOT!

One of the very best maintenance write-ups I observed in an aircraft log was a request to unplug a clog toilet. To this day I can easily quote the mechanic's sign-off when completed. "Removed one large brown trout from forward lav."

Yes Sailboat I was being funny, I wouldn't teach my bird curse words anyways, to crass....and I respect the police.

Okay so we're successfully in Seattle! They would not let me take Ollie out in the cabin (unfortunately) but I did anyways to give him some kisses. I sat with his carrier on my lap petting him in the cage half the time and he other half he was on the floor below my seat. He probably screamed like 4 times...in my eyes he's an angel bird sent from above, literally. He did soooo good. I'm a lucky mommy!

Aren't you lucky! I live in Seattle but they keep canceling my flights out of Oklahoma and I can't get home! [emoji24][emoji24]
