I've talked about building this a bit on another thread but now that MOST of the drama of our move SHOULD be over I thought a shift was in order :)

The aviary is half built lol so birds are in it but we still have a lot of work to do!

Today both of my handsome men were helping me build

And Nohea and Isana were harassing us. They might think they were being helpful...

Below, Violet green (Kaleo) next to Cinnamon green (Isana). I tried to get my "normal" green Nohea to cooperate but she and Kaleo aren't on speaking terms right now.

And Hammie, my feather mutilator? Look how good he looks! And he seems to have a reason to try to look good! Hanalei is my best foster mamma.

Awesome pics, Dani!!! I like how Levi was out there supervising, making sure you all got everything right. Lol!

And the shot of the birds all gathered around the dish? Wow!

None of the birds gnaw on the ropes supporting the perches, though? Those wouldn't last a day with my duo. Lol!

They do occasionally chew on them; they are natural fiber ropes and they, along with the dowels, are a temporary fix that my husband came up with while I was hospitalized. They will be replaced soon!

Great pics, Dani!

Yeah, I missed your little feathered ninja's Where's Waldo moment the first time around. Hilarity!

Loving the pictures!

I know the aviary isn't finished, but do you have plans to add an enclosed section? I'm planning out my future aviary (should I ever have the space!) and am loving seeing yours and getting ideas.

What are your plans for the winter?

Yes. The frame isn't nearly as strong as I thought it would be so the enclosed part will be made of tarp instead of wood. And that is my plan for winter along with heated perches. They arrived in time to acclimate for winter. If it gets colder than anticipated I may build roosting boxes that stand alone rather than hang on the wire, since the structure isn't as strong as intended. With this aviary we are learning a lot of what not to do next time lol.

I was looking into those storage shed type things or chicken coop type "shacks" I guess, but I'm always concerned about materials.

Thankfully for you in NC it's not usually too bad, but with how the weather has been, who knows!

I'm thinking that's what I'll end up doing in my next aviary; installing a plastic/rubber pre-made shed (wood just begs to be chewed) and remove the doors.

Also you can often find barn metal for cheep - painted steel panels - the coating is baked on and seems to never rust. It comes in panels and all sorts of trim pieces. People here put up "pole barns" which are beam-framed structures covered with barn metal, and there is always left over metal which people sell on craigslist etc. ... cheap and durable, they won't chew it, lasts forever, cheaper than the plastic sheds.

Part of our issue is portability. This is our fourth home in four and a half years; I need to be able to disassemble, transport, and reassemble.
