Hi

I just noticed a lump on my cockatoo that is where the preening gland is. It is about the size of a pea. I don't know if it is swollen or something else, I've attached a photo.

Thanks

That does not look good, but please dont take my view, Amazons ( what I have) don't have that gland. Lots of too owners on here should give you a better idea.

Could be an impacted preening gland.

Although preening glands can come in all shapes and sizes, I've never seen one like that. Vet visit would be a good idea, plus warm compresses. (after vet visit)

Definitely not a normal presentation for anything on a cockatoo. Please have this checked by a certified avian vet to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. I would worry about the enlargement being damaged and bleeding. (has a definite vascular appearance)

I would see a vet, First off, I'm and idiot unless it's something electrical...but that doesn't look right to me........

Not a Too person, at all, well maybe one, but anyway: I was not aware that Too's had a preening gland, as they, like Amazons are Dust Powder producers and a preening gland would be counter to that base. BUT, that is a pure guess on my part!

So, do you have your appointment with your CAV made yet?

All parrots, except amazons and hyacinth macaws (and *maybe* a few other species not common in captivity? - other macaw species in captivity do have one) should have the uropygial gland. African greys, also "powdery" birds, have a gland.
