Riley-white faced grey cockatiel (hatch date 6-28-2014) RIP Halloween-pied cockatiel
ok so the other day I was thinking I was doing something wrong because my birds wouldnt come out of the cage then yesterday we had what I'm just going to call "our happy accident" where I had Hallween on my hand and I sneezed and spooked her and she jumped out of the cage so that was exciting (not the spooking but the out of the cage part) then I had to put her back and get ready for work only to be called half way there and told not to come in labor was awful. So I went and visited my neice instead when I came home there was some issues getting her back on my hand to come out but she did it and I was able to pet her she will occasionally hiss while she is on me. After letting her stay out a few minutes longer than the morning I put her back inside the cage and went about our nightly routines then went to bed. This morning I got up and first thing I did was try to get Halloween out of the cage again she put up a fuss but eventually came out again I let her stay out a few minutes longer than before then put her back inside the cage. Tonight I after coming home and I opened the cage door put my hand right up to her no fuss what so ever she just stepped up on my hand and came out of the cage as if it was something we had done her entire life. She will occassionally hiss when on my shoulder and she won't really play when out of the cage but I'll just give her some time and she'll be playing and everything else. Also another HUGE success was with Hallows Eve tonight while Halloween was out of the cage I put my hand in the cage just to see how Hallows Eve would react and he let me put my hand all the way up to him and didn't do freak out or anything until I touched him. He never does that Normally I can get my hand about a foot away and he'll just freak out flapping his wings and everything. I think for my birds This will be the way we go I will work with both only when Halloween is out of the cage I'll work on getting Hallows Eve to step up and come out as well. Also I think it was you Wildbird who mentioned soaking pellets in boiling water. I kinda took that idea only I used room temperature water and soaked the pellets tonight and watched them dig in I think they like it better this way so I may just keep soaking their pellets for them every day. I'm so excited about the progress though. I'm sure Halloween:grey:and Hallows Eve:yellow1: are excited as well even if they won't admit it lol.

I know the beginning feels like forever and then when you finally succeed you realize that it actually happened fast. :D

I cant recall saying boiling water, I actually use any temperature. Then again, the cupboard with the pellets is right under the kettle so I always take the short route.

I can remember you mentioned that one of the bird's wings were cut to short. That is horrible, I went through exactly the same with my girl. It is extremely painful when they fall and they can break their keel bone.:( Her first clip by the wrong vet was so bad that it took 6 months before she showed any improvement. Something went wrong with the feathers that grew out and it irritated her so much that she kept on biting them until they bled. I then convinced an experienced avian vet to pull those feathers and after a month she could finally land properly. So please be very careful with that one, try to stay close to the ground and it is best that he/she do not sit on your shoulder until they can land properly.;)

I am begining to think that she was faking it in the cage because yesterday she took flight off the top of her cage and landed softly across the room.
