As I do more research, I'm narrowing down my choices and am between a quaker and a conure of some sort. I'm on a few breeders' lists and will actually be going to meet some babies and hopefully be chosen by one in the next few months (so exciting!!)

As I plan for the future (as I live at home and am a university student) I'm thinking about which would be the best when I move out- I know all birds can be noisy, and that it also depends on personality, but between quakers and conures which are generally the quietest? I've heard too many stories about people needing to rehome birds due to noise complaints from their neighbours (I actually purchased a gorgeous used bird cage from a family who needed to rehome their pair for that reason) and want to prevent that for myself and most importantly my bird later in life.

(I have also been told cockatiels are fairly quiet, comparatively- but I would prefer a conure or quaker if possible :) )

Edit: i am only interested in pyrhurra conures as I am aware that others such as sun conures can be very loud.

Aphrodite - red throated conure (RIP)
Look for pyrrhura conures: painted conure, pearly conure, crimson bellies conure, green cheek conure. These will likely be the most manageable noisewise.

Iā€™m actually on the list for pearlies and greencheeks, so thatā€™s perfect. I should have specified- these two are the only kinds Iā€™m interested in. Over the conures and cockatiels, I would definitely prefer a Quaker, but who knows. Iā€™ll probably be chosen by something I wasnā€™t expecting in the slightest. Haha

Well, my Quakers were the loudest birds I have ever owned, but I canā€™t speak for all Quakers. In most cases, the quietest parrot is the happiest parrot, but not in certain species. For example, happy budgies are horribly loud lol.

I will have to discuss with the breeder. Thereā€™s a reason budgies arenā€™t on my list. My boyfriendā€™s is so charming but never shuts up!

If size is not a big factor, check out the brotogeris family of parrots. Bigger than parrotlets, smaller then 'tiels, the are the big bird in a little body, not loud, beaks too small to hurt much on the off chance of a bite, can talk a little and whistle a lot, ours did a bunch of movie themes, and LOVE people. Really love them, our Max was so socialized is was great and he did it himself. Conures are the big thing now, but for apartments, or first time bird owners, or those with small kids, it's hard to beat canary wing , or other sub species, of this family of parrots. Our Maxie owned me when I put my hand in a cage full of them, hopped up on my fingers, looked me in the eye an gave me a big wolf whistle. Only reason we don't have one now is cuz it would have been too painful at the time to be reminded of him, and Salty picked me, which is something one should never ignore. Good luck

Yup conures all the way. Little more work than a tiel but you get a lot more out of them. If I were to liken Green Cheeks and other similar conures to a non-avian animal I would liken them to a puppy with both the good sides and the bad, with a slight mix of brattiness in there

I donā€™t agree that you get more out of conures than tiels, in fact my tiel is even cuddlier than my conure and snuggles up to my cheek. My conure enjoys head scratches, but doesnā€™t ask for them like my tiel. My conure is more active, playful, and acrobatic, while my tiel is laid back, docile, and sweet. Conures are more work as you have to watch them constantly and they really keep you on your toes. Also, conures are nippier and you have to teach them not to bite. My conure is quiet most of the time but when he does scream it can be loud. My tiel is very quiet and only makes noise when he wants out of his cage.

I know Green Cheeked Conures are quiet and owning a Quaker I can say that they can be just loud in a room. Not overly loud but maybe similar to a dog barking. Both Parrots would be fine in an apartment. My Quaker doesn't bother me at all when he has a shout lol which is only once or twice a day. Flock call in a morning and maybe another time or 2 in the day he might test his opera skills but amazing Parrots x

Thatā€™s very comforting to hear, thank you! I am definitely leaning towards quakers, and I suppose I wonā€™t have much to worry about in terms of noise as long as I keep up with the proper training.
