Nike a Hawk Head Parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus)
I got a change to use Nike's Celltei fleece cover yesterday.

So I was helping out my wife by cooking dinner and I needed to use the oven so I emptied the baking pans etc she stores in there and set it to 375.

A few minutes later she comes in the kitchen and asked what was burning. I had smelled something but she had cleaned the oven the day before so I thought it was just more cleaner burn off.

She then asked me if I had emptied the lower over....umm, no. We opened the door and it burst into flames and tons of black smoke billowed out. I ran to get a fire extinguisher and a one second blast put it out but smoke and smell was migrating through the house.

I grabbed Nike from the living room and rushed her up to the bathroom, cracked both bathroom windows (it was about 30 deg out) and closed her in.

Back down stairs to grab a key and start the car and turn the heat on. Back to the house opening up doors and windows.

Grabbed her Pak-O-Bird which already had the fleece cover on it, put her in it and drove her to my daughters house where she spent about 3 hours in the Pak before returning home.

interestingly, none of our smoke detectors went off....partly because we acted fast and got all the doors and windows open but mostly because the rooms in my 260 yr old house are so compartmented the kitchen would have to first fill up with smoke before it spilled out the door and right up the stairs to a smoke detector....so I guess I need more smoke detectors in my house.

The Pak and cover worked well for this and it was great having them all set up waiting for just something like this to happen.

I did get dinner cooked but we didn't eat until about 9pm, got packed and to bed at 11 and then a 3am wake up for a business trip...fun night!

I don't think you heard the smoke detectors because you were quick as a ninja....

Awesome "save the parrot" response....

Your on my hero board today.

It is wonderful that you were well prepared and able to get Nike out and to safety as quick as you did!

I made some notes, my friend, and did some thinking. Thanks for this.
Did Nike freak out at all?

Thanks all,
Nike was great, no squawking, just happy chirping. As a matter of fact I think my excited state said to her, "You better let this guy do whatever he wants" because I was grabbing her and moving her around, shoving her in the Pak and she never even hinted of a complaint.

One note to take....familiarize yourself with your fire extinguishers before you have a fire ;)
