Adopting More Birds ;)

Okay, so I probably sound like a hoarder at this point, but I'm not. Well, considering how many (large) parrots some of you guys have, I hardly have any birds. Anyways, we've experience a number of devestating losses to the budgie flock this past year (Alice, Samantha, and Ziggy), and Tiki lost his support system. Ria was there for Tiki, through all the neglect, fear, and suffering. She, along with all my poor angels, will be missed.

So, anyways, I'm adopting SIX new budgies in mid-April. I saw the ad on Kijiji, and this pair of senior budgies needed a new home. The female is a plucker and a chronic egg layer. Anyways, after communicating back and forth several times, it turns out their guardian has four other budgies that she needs to rehome. So, I'm going to be adding six budgies to my flock soon (after quarantine).

As for Tiki, I think there's going to be an equally handicapped red-fronted kākāriki coming his way, named Kiki. Kiki is currently undergoing rehabilitation at a parrot rescue for a bacterial infection, splayed legs, and muscle weakness. While I haven't been accepted quite yet, it sounds like I'm a shoe-in to adopt him . My parents aren't too thrilled about me adopting another crippled kākāriki, but I'm only going to adopt him AFTER he's done all his meds. I just need to do physio exercises with him.

Congrats!!! And as long as you have the time, money, space, energy, and emotional stability to care for yourself, your family, and all your pets then it isn’t hoarding

I was actually thinking about you when I was writing that hoarder comment . Oh, and the reason I haven't been on the forum for so long is because I got into keeping freshwater shrimp.

Don’t worry about not having enough birds in your flock. I only have 4, and my house is full. some people only have 1 bird, and are very devoted to that bird. There is no rush to add more birds right away. However, as long as you can care for them without taking away from your current birds, go ahead

If you have a large aviary for your flock of budgies, no reason to worry about having too many of them! They usually do exceptionally well in a large group

It does not sound like you are overwhelmed with the birds you have, so adopting another special needs bird is not a big challenge if you know what you are getting into and what they need, if it will actually mean 'more' time... I've found that often a special needs bird just needs 'different' time versus 'more' time!

I personally have a blue and gold macaw that is like a small child, so he is super high maintenance and needs a lot of attention. My other larger personal bird is a bare eye cockatoo. Ivory has become more independent and is mostly interested in flying back and forth, tho she stops by often for some attention. I also have a small group of budgies, but they are not hands on, they just enjoy each other's company.

If you are confident you have the time, space and resources to support another special needs bird, you are far from a hoarder

Can't say I've had good luck with animals lately, either... but 2018 is a new year. Hopefully things pick up!

Hey everyone, I got the new budgies on Saturday! Trixie and Cloudy are in one cage, and Rainy, Comet, Alex, and Starlight in another. Trixie laid an egg today (she's the chronic egg layer and plucker), so I'm going to see about getting her hormone injections if I can't get her to quit laying.

Rainy and Comet are both tame and will step up (when they feel like it...), and the other four are also well socialized. They aren't afraid of me at all, and they like to make zebra finch vocalizations as well as lovebird calls.

Trixie seems to want to go in the aviary with my original four budgies + Tiki, but she's going to have to wait just like everyone else. Man, she's plucked quite badly. I'm thinking about maybe getting her a hoodie to wear or something. Like, I don't want her poking at her feathers, and she's probably cold, not to mention the fact that the feeling of being squeezed by clothes releases endorphins. I don't know, just something I'm considering.

Oh, Rumi and Pollo are AGY-free! Yay! No more freaking medication!

Rosie's been beating me up lately, so as of yesterday I've started giving her timeouts. When she chomps down on me, I tell her "bad", then Noah and I leave the room for 1–3 minutes to punish her. Honestly, I've put up with her nonsense for long enough. She often bites me for no reason whatsoever. She's being a jealous, territorial little brat. She managed to earn herself three timeouts in just fifteen minutes yesterday. I mean, when Noah was beating everyone up when we first got him, it was because he was curious and couldn't control his temper. Rosie, on the other hand, is very much in control of her actions and chooses to attack me.

I mean, it's not nice having little bite marks all over my hands when I'm trying to use apple cider vinegar, or when I'm mixing saltwater up for my hermit crabs and opae ula. To be fair, she can be really sweet. She does this thing where she presses the side of her beak against my skin and licks me. It's really cute.

What kind of shrimp do you have? I have high-grade crystal reds, cherry shrimp, a ghost shrimp (I need to get more so she can breed), short-nosed algae eating shrimp, amano shrimp (planning on breeding these guys), and for brackish I have opae ula. Need to get more freshwater species...

I wonder if we might have spoken somewhere else! LOL

Sounds like overall a great update! Except not being able to figure out Rosie! I'm sure she probably has a reason for biting!

Sounds like you'll certainly have your hands full with all these new family members. ^^
I think adopting birds is a great think, you'll certainly be giving them a life that's better and more worth living than before.
If I had the space I'd happily adopt another friend for Sherbert.
